NDE boss promises 5 percent employment opportunity for PWDs

The Director General of The National Directorate of Empowerment, Dr. Nasiru Ladan Mohammed Argungu on Thursday after a meeting with delegation of The Albino Foundation(TAF) led by the founder of the Foundation, Jake Epelle, expressed optimism to work to ensure 5 percent empowerment opportunity as it is stipulated in Section 29 of Discrimination against Persons with disabilities Prohibition act 2018 which states that all employers of labour in public organizations shall as much as possible, have persons with disabilities constituting at least 5% of their employment.

In a chat with The Qualitative Magazine TQM, Chris Agbo, he said that the delegation asked for 5 % employment opportunity which he promised to fulfill and he would be put a team together from the TAF delegation and NDE to come up with modalities in terms of various trainings to see how they can take it up from there. When he asked about the inaccessibility of NDE building which may be an obstacle for wheelchair and clutches users who would want to have access to the programmes of NDE, he said that he apologized to Chris Agbo who is a wheelchair user saying that immediately he was informed that a journalist on wheelchair is among the pressmen that came to cover the programme, he decided to come downstairs to have media chat so that Chris Agbo can participate.

“We have stayed in this building for 30 years and we are under rent, Federal Government have given us a place and it is under renovation, soon it will be done and we will relocate to the place which would be very accessible” he explained.

Other prominent members of TAF delegation were Rasak Adekoya of Sightsavers, Alhaji Abdulmumuni Ujah, The Chairman, JONAPWD FCT Chapter, Damian Okey Ivom, National Programme office, TAF and many other members of TAF.
