In the wake of a stirring controversy surrounding allegations of discrimination against a person with a disability, the National Commission for Persons with Disabilities (NCPWD) has taken swift action by summoning the management of KFC to an investigative panel of enquiry.

The incident, which has garnered widespread attention in the media, involves the son of a former Governor of Ogun State. Reports of discrimination have sparked outrage and calls for accountability, prompting the NCPWD to intervene and address the matter head-on.

In a press release issued on Friday, 29th March 2024, the Commission’s Director of Enforcement and Compliance Department, Ikem Uchegbulam Esq., disclosed that the summons was issued to KFC management to thoroughly investigate the allegations and provide necessary explanations.

Dr. James David Lalu, the Executive Secretary of the NCPWD, emphasized the gravity of the situation, highlighting the need to uphold the rights of persons with disabilities as enshrined in the Discrimination Against Persons with Disabilities (Prohibition) Act of 2018.

“The issue of discrimination is very serious and cannot be taken lightly, regardless of the individuals involved,” stated Dr. Lalu. He stressed the importance of holding accountable those who perpetrate discrimination against persons with disabilities, signaling a firm stance against such injustices.

The Executive Secretary underscored the significance of the investigative panel’s role in uncovering the circumstances surrounding the alleged discrimination and assessing the adequacy of measures taken thus far. He reiterated the Commission’s commitment to preventing future occurrences of discrimination against persons with disabilities in Nigeria.

The scheduled meeting, slated for the 4th of April 2024 at the Commission’s headquarters in Abuja, is expected to be attended by representatives from KFC and will be closely covered by the press.
