The Management team of National Commission for Persons with Disabilities led by the Executive Secretary of the Commission, Mr. James David Lalu in a recent courtesy visit to the Federal Housing Authority (FHA) had formed an alliance in order to make Housing infrastructure available to the community of Persons with Disabilities. The event provided the platform for mutual agreement and understanding between NCPWD and the Federal Housing Authority, their resolve to alleviate the housing deficit among Persons with Disabilities.
In his opening remarks, Lalu expressed his gratitude to the MD for his warm reception and his determination to dialogue with the Commission despite his busy schedule. He reiterated that Persons with disabilities experience difficulties in many aspects of life especially the inability to have a home for themselves. This he said affected their psyche and delivery at work even with their caregivers.
The ES pointed to the section with 5% provision for Persons with disabilities in the 2018 Establishment Act of the Commission signed into law by the Commander -In -Chief, President Muhammadu Buhariin in 2019 to give representation to the PWDs in all government offices. He then seized the occasion to thank President Buhari for demonstrating what he referred to as ‘disabled-friendly’.
In a quick response, the Managing Director, FHA, Senator Gbenga Ashafa said he was excited to have the Executive Secretary of the Commission in his office. He further revealed that he was fulfilled seeing the Commission come to reality since he was part of the Senate that passed the bill for the establishment of the Commission.
More so, he gave an assurance that the NCPWD would be given preference in the Housing Scheme which has about 300 units in Abuja and 4000 units which are currently under construction across the country. The MD also promised to offer extensive assistance to the Commission in getting collaboration of Federal Mortgage Bank to facilitate the process of ensuring affordable homes for the disabled persons.
