NCPWD Boss Names Gov. Alex Otti “Disability Inclusion Champion” as He Approves NCPWD Zonal Office Facility

In a historic move toward fostering inclusivity and empowering persons with disabilities, Governor Alex Otti of Abia State has been lauded as a “champion of the disabilities community in Nigeria.” This accolade came from Hon. Ayuba Gufwan, the Executive Secretary and Chief Executive Officer of the National Commission for Persons with Disabilities (NCPWD), during a working visit to the governor in Umuahia.

Hon. Gufwan, speaking on behalf of the disabilities community, praised Governor Otti for his exemplary leadership and commitment to improving the lives of persons with disabilities (PWDs). He commended the governor for the establishment of the Abia State Commission for Persons with Disabilities, a bold step that positions Abia as a model state for inclusion and equal opportunity.

A Beacon of Hope for PWDs

“We are deeply appreciative that upon your assumption of office, you established the Abia State equivalent of the National Commission for Persons with Disabilities,” Hon. Gufwan said, emphasizing the governor’s dedication to creating a more inclusive society.

Addressing Governor Otti directly, Gufwan expressed the heartfelt gratitude of the estimated 35 million persons with disabilities across Nigeria. “We say thank you for what you have done for us. Your actions resonate across the nation, and we recognize you as a true champion of our community,” he said.

The delegation from the National Commission for Persons with Disabilities had visited Abia State to seek approval for a facility to house the Southeast Zonal Office of the commission. They expressed their belief that Abia State’s hospitable environment made it the ideal location for such an office.

“There is no place in this region that is as welcoming and supportive of persons with disabilities as Abia State,” Gufwan stated. He noted the difficulty of running a national commission with just one office in Abuja and emphasized the importance of bringing services closer to the Southeastern population.

Governor Otti’s Pledge of Inclusion

In his response, Governor Alex Otti reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to fostering a society built on inclusivity, merit, and fairness. The governor made it clear that his government does not discriminate against any group, including persons with disabilities, women, or individuals of differing religious or ethnic backgrounds.

“Our government is built on meritocracy and inclusivity. We do not discriminate based on disability, gender, religion, or ethnicity. That is why we pride ourselves as the first state in recent times to appoint a Head of Service who is neither from Abia State nor the Southeast but from the South-South,” Governor Otti said.

He further encouraged persons with disabilities, emphasizing that having a disability does not define or limit their potential. “That someone has one disability or the other does not make him a disabled person. You are capable and valuable contributors to society,” he added.

Approval for Southeast Zonal Office

In a momentous decision, Governor Otti immediately approved the request for a Southeast Zonal Office in Abia State. The governor directed his Special Assistant on Persons with Disabilities to collaborate with the Director General of the Umuahia Capital Development Authority and the Commissioner for Lands and Housing to identify a suitable facility.

“As you leave here today, rest assured that we have not only heard your request but have approved it. In the next two or three months, your office will relocate to a befitting location in Abia State. Hon. Ayuba Gufwan will be invited to the formal handover of the Southeast Zonal Office,” Governor Otti assured.

Recognition and Gratitude

This decision is a testament to the governor’s inclusive leadership style and his administration’s focus on creating equal opportunities for all citizens. The disabilities community in Nigeria has praised Governor Otti’s proactive measures, describing them as a beacon of hope for millions of PWDs who face daily challenges of discrimination and inaccessibility.

Hon. Gufwan expressed optimism that the establishment of the Southeast Zonal Office would significantly enhance the commission’s ability to serve persons with disabilities in the region. “This will bring our services closer to the people, ensuring that they have access to the support and resources they need to thrive,” he said.

Setting a Standard for Inclusive Governance

Governor Otti’s commitment to inclusion has not gone unnoticed. His efforts have set a precedent for other state governments, highlighting the importance of proactive policies and initiatives that address the needs of marginalized groups.

As the Southeast Zonal Office takes shape, it is expected to serve as a hub for advocacy, empowerment, and support for persons with disabilities in the region. Governor Otti’s leadership continues to inspire hope and set a standard for inclusive governance in Nigeria.

With the governor’s assurance, the disabilities community can now look forward to a future where their voices are heard, their needs are met, and their rights are upheld. Abia State is truly leading the charge for disability inclusion, and Governor Alex Otti stands at the forefront as a champion of this transformative movement.
