NCPWD Applauds Federal University Lafia for Setting National Standard in Inclusive Education

In a bold recognition of educational excellence and social inclusion, the National Commission for Persons with Disabilities (NCPWD) has commended the Federal University, Lafia (FULafia) for its outstanding commitment to fostering inclusive education and empowering students with disabilities.

The commendation was given by the Executive Secretary of NCPWD, Chief Ayuba Gufwan, who described the institution’s policies and initiatives as “a remarkable standard for higher inclusive education in Nigeria.”

According to Chief Gufwan, the Federal University Lafia has not only provided academic opportunities for students with disabilities but has also created a supportive environment that enables them to thrive, compete, and contribute meaningfully to the nation.

A Bold Step Towards True Inclusion

Chief Gufwan highlighted several exemplary policies of the institution that underscore its leadership in inclusive education.

  1. 75% Subsidy on Student Fees and Charges
He explained that the institution’s decision to subsidize fees by as much as 75% for students with disabilities is a “bold and compassionate” policy that reduces financial burdens and eliminates barriers that often deny students with disabilities access to higher education.
  2. Special Admission Policy with 2% Reservation
The university has institutionalized a quota that reserves 2% of its admissions specifically for candidates with special needs. This, according to Gufwan, is a clear demonstration of equity and fairness in educational access. “FULafia has proven that no one should be left behind in the pursuit of knowledge,” he said.
  3. Creation of the Center for Disability Studies
The establishment of the Center for Disability Studies in the university has been hailed as a visionary step. The center is not only a hub for academic research but also for advocacy, training, and advancing disability inclusion nationwide.
  4. Accessible Hostel Accommodation
Gufwan further praised the university for allocating special hostels to students with disabilities, ensuring that they live in dignity, safety, and comfort while pursuing their studies.
  5. Regular Engagement with Students with Disabilities
Perhaps most impressive, he noted, is the institution’s culture of continuous dialogue with its students with special needs. “By listening to and integrating their voices into its development agenda, the institution has built trust and inclusivity at its core,” Gufwan remarked.

A Model for Other Universities

Chief Gufwan stressed that these policies not only align with the Revised National Policy on Inclusive Education (2024) but also advance Nigeria’s broader goals of social inclusion and poverty reduction.

He described FULafia as a “beacon of hope and inspiration” for other higher institutions across the country, urging them to replicate the model if they have not already done so.

In his words:

“Federal University Lafia has shown exceptional leadership in disability inclusion. We call on other institutions of higher learning in Nigeria to emulate these policies so that more persons with disabilities can realize their academic potential and contribute to national development.”

Partnership for the Future

The NCPWD boss further revealed that the Commission looks forward to deepening collaboration with Federal University Lafia in promoting inclusive education. He expressed optimism that such partnerships will create sustainable pathways for persons with disabilities to thrive both in education and in life.

Chief Gufwan also extended a personal appeal to the Vice Chancellor of the institution, urging him to serve as an “ambassador of inclusive education” by championing similar initiatives across other universities nationwide.

FULafia: A Trailblazer in Disability-Inclusive Education

With its progressive policies and people-centered approach, Federal University Lafia has now been placed firmly on the map as one of Nigeria’s leading advocates of inclusive higher education.

The institution’s bold actions are more than just policies; they represent a lifeline of opportunity, dignity, and empowerment for students with disabilities who, for too long, have been marginalized in the Nigerian education system.

As the conversation on inclusive governance and disability rights deepens in Nigeria, the Federal University Lafia’s efforts stand as a testament that inclusion is not just a moral responsibility but a practical pathway to national growth and development.
