JONAPWD seeks for 15% Affirmative Action for PWDs at Constitution Review

The Joint National Association of Persons with Disabilities (JONAPWD) has pushed for 15% Affirmative Action for elective and appointive post for persons with disabilities at the National Public hearing of the 1999 Constitution Review.

The President, MS Ekaete Judith Umoh made the call at the hearing held at Africa Hall, International Conference Center in Abuja on the 3rd and 4th of June 2021.She sampled the Uganda Model on Affirmative Action where legislative seats are reserved for only persons with disabilities to contest amongst themselves.

Umoh reminded the house that persons with disabilities are smart and resourceful and emphasized the need to provide a level playing field so that persons with disabilities can be at the decision-making table and contribute to National development.

While thanking the committee, she pleaded with them to keep an eye on all altercations that can provide visibility for persons with disabilities, “We want to be visible in governance, we want to add value and don’t want to keep taking, we ask for 15% Affirmative actions on both Elective and Appointive positions for persons with disabilities in governance to enable us serve our beloved country”
