JONAPWD pledges support to work with National commission on the issuance of disability certificate/ID

Joint National Association of Persons with Disabilities (JONAPWD) have pledged support to the National Commission for Persons with Disabilities during a National Consultative Forum to discuss the process of issuance of Disability Certificate / Identity card for Persons with disabilities which took place from 14-15 April 2021, convened by National Disability Commission and Inclusive Friends Association with support from Save the Children.

The Executive Secretary of the National Commission for Persons with Disabilities (NCPWD) Mr. James Lalu during his opening speech at the workshop urged all participants to give their best and debate extensively on the subject matter.

Ms Ekaete Judith Umoh, National President of Joint National Associate of persons with disabilities (JONAPWD ) in her remark urged participants to open their minds, engage constructively in other to collectively achieve our goal of Disability certificate for all persons with disabilities.

Grace Jerry, the Executive Director of Inclusive Friends Association (IFA), the organizers of the workshop, thanked participants for honoring the invitation and wished participate a fruitful deliberation.

Barr. Danlami Basharu, the former JONAPWD Chairman and the Chairman, CRDP Committee in his paper titled; Experience Sharing on Disability Certificate and Identity card reality from other country, stressed the need for the issuance of the disability certificate and its benefits to the disability community, drawing from experiences of other countries.

Barr Ikem Uchegbunam, the acting director, Enforcement and Compliance of the NCPWD took participants on defining roles and partnership towards the issuance of Disability certificate, pointing out that JONAPWD would play a major role in mobilization and awareness creation.

Dr Irene Patrick-Ogbogu, the Executive Director Disability Right Advocacy Center (DRAC) speaking on Data collection methodology stressed on the importance of adopting Washington Group set of Questions in collecting data on persons with disabilities in Nigeria.

Earlier, the National President of JONAPWD, facilitated a session on Building Eligibility Criteria for Acquiring a Disability Certificate and ID, which was interactive and engaging where everyone contributed to the eligibility criteria that should be put in place for the acquisition of the certificate/ Identity card.

JONAPWD thanked the organizers of the event and pledged her support to the Disability Certificate /ID project.
