James Lalu Champions Inclusive Pilgrimage: Pushes for PWD Representation on Holy Journeys

In a groundbreaking move to ensure inclusivity, Dr. James David Lalu, the dynamic Executive Secretary of the National Commission for Persons with Disabilities, spearheaded a compelling drive at the Nigeria Christian Pilgrim Commission (NCPC) on March 5, 2024, in the heart of Abuja.

Embracing the mantra “nothing about us, without us,” Dr. Lalu passionately advocated for the prominent representation of Persons with Disabilities (PWD) in Christian pilgrimages.

Addressing the Commission’s leadership, he emphasized the historical absence of visible representation for PWDs in these sacred journeys. However, he exuded confidence, citing President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s unwavering commitment to an all-inclusive governance as a catalyst for transformative change.

“I have no doubt that President Tinubu’s administration will make provisions for PWDs, ensuring they feel a sense of belonging in society,” Dr. Lalu asserted optimistically.

In an official press release signed by Mbanefo JohnMichaels I, Head of Press and Public Relations Unit, dated March 5, 2024, Dr. Lalu underscored the pivotal role religious organizations play in shaping public opinions through interventions and humanitarian programs. He also revealed the Commission’s aggressive pursuit of a 5% employment representation for PWDs across all government offices, including NCPC.

“I sincerely solicit a 10% representation from the over 35 million PWDs in Nigeria to embark on this year’s pilgrimage to Jerusalem,” he added, highlighting the urgency of this call to action.

Dr. Lalu also stressed the imperative for enhanced accessibility within NCPC, advocating for structures that facilitate ease of access for Persons with Disabilities.

In a swift response, the newly appointed Executive Secretary of Nigeria Christian Pilgrim Commission, Bishop Adegbite Stephen Victor, expressed his delight at the fortuitous timing of Dr. Lalu’s visit, aligning with his one-month anniversary in office.

“Rest assured, there is hope for the PWD community under President Tinubu’s administration,” Bishop Victor assured, affirming his commitment to ensuring that the message reaches high-ranking political office holders who will contribute to sponsoring PWDs on the pilgrimage to the Holyland.

Bishop Victor further pledged that the ongoing construction of the NCPC Headquarters will prioritize accessibility standards, symbolizing a tangible commitment to inclusivity.

The climax of the meeting featured Dr. Lalu’s presentation of Accessibility Standard Regulations and other pertinent documents from the National Commission for Persons with Disabilities, solidifying the foundation for a more inclusive pilgrimage experience.
