INEC Pledges Disability-Inclusive Elections in Zamfara Ahead of 2027 Polls

GUSAU, October 23, 2026 — The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has pledged to expand electoral access for persons with disabilities in Zamfara State ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 general elections, promising improved access to voter information, polling facilities and appropriate support for eligible voters.

The commitment comes amid growing calls for inclusive electoral processes that guarantee persons with disabilities the opportunity to participate in elections without discrimination, physical barriers or unnecessary restrictions.

Zamfara Resident Electoral Commissioner, Mahmoud Isah, gave the assurance on Friday while opening a sensitisation programme in Gusau aimed at identifying and addressing barriers preventing persons with disabilities from participating fully in the electoral process.

Isah emphasised that disability should never be a reason for denying eligible citizens access to voter education, Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) or polling units to exercise their constitutional right to vote.

INEC Targets Barriers to Electoral Participation

The electoral commissioner called on electoral officers and disability desk officers across Zamfara State’s 14 local government areas to strengthen collaboration with organisations representing persons with disabilities.

He urged stakeholders to identify practical challenges affecting voters with disabilities and ensure their concerns were incorporated into election planning and implementation.

“As we prepare for the 2027 general elections, INEC must continue to promote inclusive electoral practices, accessible information, respectful treatment and appropriate assistance for voters who require it,” Isah said.

He encouraged disability advocacy organisations to share their experiences and recommend practical measures to improve access to voter registration services, election information and polling facilities.

Beyond Sensitisation: INEC Urged to Deliver Practical Solutions

Isah stressed that the engagement should go beyond routine consultations and produce tangible solutions capable of improving electoral participation for persons with disabilities.

He noted that INEC’s responsibility extended beyond conducting elections to ensuring that eligible citizens were treated fairly, respectfully and without discrimination throughout the electoral process.

The commissioner expressed confidence that stronger cooperation between electoral officials and disability organisations would contribute to more inclusive and credible elections in Zamfara State.

Accessibility Remains a Critical Electoral Challenge

The commitment comes as electoral administrators intensify preparations for the 2027 general elections, with renewed attention on the accessibility of voting procedures, information channels and polling locations.

For persons with disabilities, barriers such as inaccessible polling units, inadequate voter information, communication difficulties and the absence of appropriate assistance can undermine their ability to exercise their democratic rights.

While INEC’s pledge signals a positive step towards disability inclusion, the effectiveness of the initiative will ultimately depend on how identified barriers are addressed through practical arrangements, accessible facilities, appropriate assistance and the implementation of approved electoral guidelines.

As preparations for 2027 continue, disability organisations and electoral stakeholders will be watching closely to ensure that the promise of inclusive elections translates into meaningful participation for persons with disabilities.

The ultimate test is simple: Can every eligible voter with a disability independently, safely and with dignity access the information, facilities and support needed to cast their vote?
