Inclusive Friends Association (IFA) on Tuesday in Abuja organized a roundtable consultative meeting to discuss how learnings can be made inclusive for children with disabilities in primary schools using the current curriculum.
The meeting is part of the activities of IFA’s project supported by Disability Rights Fund (DRF) on Quality Inclusive Education for Children with Disabilities in the FCT with the purpose of making quality inclusive education, accessible, acceptable, adaptable and available to about 120,000 children within the six Area Councils in the FCT through Research, stakeholder engagement and Evidence based Advocacy.
The Executive Director, IFA, Grace Jerry in her opening remark said that the essence of the meeting is to develop a methodology of learning for children with disabilites that is adaptive.
“We are aware that the method of teaching being practiced in Nigeria is not suitable for every child”
“There are children, we call slow learners but they are not slow learners, it is our duties as key stakeholders to identify ways and methods at which children in this category can learn effectively”
The meeting brought together stakeholders on educational sector and Organization of Persons With Disabilites (OPDs) who are working on the implementation of Inclusive Education Policy.
