IFA Hosts Stakeholders Meeting to Advance Disability Law in Benue State

National Endowment For Democracy-Funded Project Strengthens Equality and Inclusion of Persons With Disabilities

In a concerted effort to promote equality and inclusion for persons with disabilities in Benue State, the Inclusive Friends Association (IFA) organized a stakeholders meeting focused on the domestication of disability law. The project, funded by the National Endowment For Democracy and themed “Strengthening Equality And Inclusion Of Persons With Disabilities,” aimed to enhance disability legislation and foster greater inclusion within the state.

The meeting, held on Tuesday, April 16th, 2024, in the capital city of Benue State, Makurdi, convened a diverse array of participants, including key government officials, civil society organizations (CSOs), and leaders from the disability community. The gathering served as a platform for robust discussion and collaboration towards advancing disability rights and legislation within the state.

A highlight of the meeting was a compelling panel discussion on the importance of domesticating the disability bill, moderated by the Program Manager of IFA, Stephen Oloche Idoko. The panel featured insightful contributions from prominent figures, including Mr. Alexander Mbakindev, Acting Executive Secretary of the Benue State Rehabilitation Board in Apir Makurdi; Barr. Festus Okpeh Esq and Barr. S.T Sabeh Esq, Legal Advisors to JONAPWD Benue State; Hon. Doris Shadrack Iyo, Director General of the Benue State Social Investment Programme Agency; and Hon. Bemshima Anshe, Personal Assistant to the Executive Governor of Benue State on Disability Matters.

The panelists generously shared their expertise and perspectives on various aspects of the disability bill, including its legal implications, alignment with existing state laws and policies, and potential challenges and opportunities for implementation. Their insights provided valuable guidance for stakeholders seeking to navigate the complexities of disability legislation and promote greater inclusivity within the state.

Mr. Alexander Mbakindev emphasized the importance of aligning the disability bill with existing legal frameworks to ensure effective implementation and maximum impact. Barr. Festus Okpeh Esq and Barr. S.T Sabeh Esq provided invaluable legal insights, highlighting the need for comprehensive legislation that safeguards the rights and dignity of persons with disabilities.

Hon. Doris Shadrack Iyo underscored the role of government agencies in promoting inclusivity and social investment, emphasizing the potential benefits of the disability bill for enhancing social and economic empowerment. Hon. Bemshima Anshe reaffirmed the government’s commitment to prioritizing disability inclusion and pledged continued support for legislative efforts to advance disability rights within the state.
