A Ghanaian man and barber with physical disability, Richard Tetteh, has given a heartbreaking narration about how he became disabled and his struggle with stigma from society.

Speaking with DJ Nyaami of SVTV Africa, the Tema-Newtown-based barber disclosed that he became paralysed at the age of eight after he visited a hospital for an injection. The wheelchair user indicated that he’s had to deal with stigma and discrimination, including being denied education due to his condition.

Taught by a professional barber, Tetteh began his career in the field in 1999. He has since defeated repeated acts of disdain from society in his career but he’s unable to work efficiently because his tools are damaged. Due to his physical impairment, Tetteh has not been fortunate with finding love in women, however, he hopes to settle with a lady he recently met. He admitted that people with disabilities are facing daunting difficulties but advised that they should learn a skill instead of begging. Tetteh, who is working on completing his shop, needs help from the public, he told SVTV Africa.

In other news, a Nigerian man with physical disability identified as Michael Showunmi has been commended on social media for enrolling a schoolgirl in a catering school.

The young man said the schoolgirl named Ajibola Eniola is an orphan whose school fees his foundation has been paying since 2020.

After being asked what skill she would like to learn, Eniola said she preferred catering and baking. Showunmi’s foundation received help from good Samaritans and Eniola was enrolled in a catering centre.
