Grassroots Initiative for Gender and Development- GRID, a non-governmental organisation providing humanitarian response in rural communities has produced a documentary to raise awareness on the exclusion Persons with disabilities face in disaster response and recovery.
The Executive Director of GRID, Isi Elebhose, said because persons with disabilities, particularly women and girls with disabilities (WGWDs) are disproportionately impacted and face barriers in accessing humanitarian support, this has necessitated GRID to empower WGWDs in communities to advocate for disability inclusion and provide a platform for amplifying their voices through documentary and story-telling.
The documentary titled HIDDEN brings to fore the lived experiences of Women with Disabilities in communities in Delta State, Nigeria, who have been impacted by years of recurrent flooding and the COVID-19 Pandemic. It is a call-to-action to State and non State actors to spotlight women with disabilities in humanitarian response and ensuring their meaningful access, protection, assistance, and participation in decision making in the design of response and recovery actions.
