Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde appointed a person with disability in each of the 33 local governments and all local council development areas (LCDA) in Oyo state as Supervisory Councillors.
The move is an affirmative action meant to promote the inclusion of people with disabilities in politics, and enhance their self-esteem in Oyo state. “Gov. Makinde, no doubt, remains the most inclusive governor in Nigeria’s history. He is keenly committed to the task of changing the negative narrative that has shrouded issues about disability in Nigeria” Oyo State Disability Vanguard said in a statement on Tuesday, 17th December. “Disability empowerment according to Gov. Makinde entails taking deliberate actions to right the wrongs of several years of disability dis-empowerment in Nigeria.”
The governor’s executive assistant on Disability matters, Barr. Ayodele Adekanmbi, is working assiduously to ensure that no person with disability is left behind in Oyo state in the government’s resolve to empower the disabled. “People with disabilities in Oyo state should strive to work together as one big family in order to help the government succeed in its task of liberating the disability community”. it added. Meanwhile, the Executive Assistant to the Governor on Disability Matters, Barr. Ayodele Adekanmbi yesterday called on His Excellency, Gov. Seyi Makinde, to wish him a happy birthday. Barr. Adekanmbi, in a statement yesterday, prayed for long life, good health and divine guidance for Gov. Makinde, whose birthday, as providence would have it, coincides with the celebration of Christ’s birth – Christmas. Bar. Adekanmbi reiterated that Gov. Makinde has so far demonstrated his commitment to inclusion of people with disabilities in the socio-economic and political spheres of Oyo state through strategic guidance provided by him, the Executive Assistant on Disability Matters, Barr. Adekanmbi” “Only recently, about 68 people with disabilities will be appointed as Supervisory Counselors in all the LGA/LCDAs of Oyo state. This initiative, no doubt, will provide the necessary impetus to promote the participation of disabled people in politics.
