The Tuesday, 13th of July, 2021 would be part of history in Plateau State disability community as a brand new board members of the Plateau State Disability Rights Commission was inaugurated. It was done alongside board of other Commissions and the function was performed by the governor of Plateau State and the Chairman Northern Governors Forum , Barr. Simon Bako Lalong, , at the government House little Ray field.
The Board Members of Plateau State Disability Rights Commission that were inaugurated are as follows:
Ms. Kyennan John Mizim………… as Chairperson
Mr. Seth Attah ……………………………. Member
Mr. Gyang Joshua Zi …………………… Member
Ms. Catherine Kyamwan ……………. Member and
Mr. Deignmuk M. Damasus …………Member.
While Inaugurating the board members of Plateau State Disability Rights Commission, The governor, stated that People with disabilities have a special place in his heart, that is why, apart from positioning the commission in line with the Laws establishing it, his administration have continued to carry along this special group, in all his government policies and programs.
He also stated that Plateau state have become a shining example to the entire Nation, which lead to the setting up of the National Commission for Persons with Disabilities, currently headed by a Plateau State Son, Mr. James Lalu, who is serving as the Executive Secretary of the Commission. He was the past Chairman, Plateau State Disability Rights Commission.
The governor reminded the newly inaugurated members that Plateau state have already raised the bar high, and as such, nothing less is being expected from them. They should most take the commission to the next level, by ensuring that, there is more equitability, divisibility and more opportunities for persons with one form of disability or the other. Already a legal frame work is in place to ensure, that the society carry along this categories of people. Therefore, Members of the Board must ensure that there is compliance and enforcement of the provisions of the law for these people to contribute to the societal development.
The governor also stated that his party, APC says, there should be no any appointment of five people without a person with disability in such an appointment. Assuring the appointees of his government support towards ensuring that they discharge their duties to the best of their abilities. The members must be ready to be sacrificial, patriotic and selfless.
He further charged them to reframe from abusing their offices and to also shun any act of corruption, favoritism and nepotism, saying the civil service is not a religious organization, a political party or an ethnic entity. Therefore, they must be professional and fair to all, according to the laws and regulations guarding the Institutions.
Governor Lalong warned that the government will not hesitate to remove any one found wanting, and where necessary initiate legal prosecution on anyone found guilty of abusing public trust.
The new Chairperson of the Plateau State Disability Rights commission, Ms. Kyennan Mizim, who was one time member of the Commission, in an interview with The Qualitative Magazine (TQM), said that she will work with the various disability laws, to see to their full implementation to better the lives of persons with Disabilities in Plateau State, in terms of education, health care, rehabilitation, empowerment and employment, by working together with Ministries, Departments, Agencies as well as other stakeholders to drive these goals.
She added that as the current regional coordinator of Network of women with disabilities, she will work to ensure that, women have inclusion in all aspect of societal life in the state.
The chairman, Join National Association of Persons with Disabilities. Plateau State Chapter. Mr. Shindul Aaron while speaking to The Qualitative Magazine said that the inauguration of the Board members of the Plateau State Disability Rights Commission is a very good thing to the community of persons with disabilities, as this would kick start a lot of activities in the commission and the community at large, as members of Plateau State Disability Community look forward to a cordial collaborative and harmonious work with the Chairperson and her members, so that the story of the people with disabilities will change for better in Plateau State.
