The Enugu State Joint National Association of Persons with Disabilities (JONAPWD) achieved another milestone in its advocacy for inclusion this week by engaging with the Honorable Commissioner for Lands, Barr. Chimaobi Patrick Okorie, in a sensitization meeting aimed at discussing the new Enugu State Geographic Information System (ENGIS) policy. The meeting, which also addressed land use regulations and an executive order signed by Governor Peter Mbah, explored the implications of these policies for persons with disabilities.
Embracing Transparency and Efficiency
Barr. Chimaobi Okorie used the meeting as an opportunity to shed light on the inclusive ideology driving Governor Peter Mbah’s administration. He emphasized the far-reaching benefits of the ENGIS policy, which seeks to bring transparency, efficiency, and ease of doing business in land transactions across Enugu State.
Highlighting the government’s vision, the Commissioner explained how the new land use regulation and executive order would create new urban areas while curbing the menace of land grabbing. He urged all concerned citizens to visit the ministry to regularize their land title documents, assuring them of a seamless process under the new system.
“This administration prioritizes inclusivity and fairness, ensuring every segment of society, including persons with disabilities, is considered essential. Governor Mbah is committed to creating opportunities for all and addressing concerns through policies that work for everyone,” Barr. Okorie stated.
He concluded by reaffirming the administration’s resolve to foster a land management system that benefits citizens and attracts investors, positioning Enugu State as a hub for economic growth. “Our governor means what he says and says what he means in developing Enugu State,” he remarked confidently.
Acknowledging Inclusive Governance
The chairman of Enugu State JONAPWD, Comrade Onyebuchi Mba, lauded the government’s commitment to inclusive governance, describing it as a welcome development for persons with disabilities in the state.
Speaking on behalf of the association, Comrade Mba thanked the Honorable Commissioner for the invitation and the opportunity to contribute to the ongoing discussions about land policies. He particularly praised Governor Mbah’s disability-friendly policies, which have raised optimism within the disability community.
“We deeply appreciate the governor’s inclusive approach to governance and the effort to ensure that persons with disabilities are not left behind. Kindly convey our goodwill message to His Excellency as we faithfully await the establishment of the Enugu State Disability Commission,” Mba said.
He expressed optimism that the new policies would open doors for persons with disabilities, particularly in areas such as property ownership and economic inclusion, marking a step forward in the fight against discrimination and systemic barriers.
Addressing Concerns
The meeting was interactive, allowing members of JONAPWD to raise questions about specific areas of concern. Barr. Okorie addressed these issues comprehensively, providing clarity on how the new policies would affect persons with disabilities.
The Commissioner reassured the executives of JONAPWD that their voices were being heard and that the government was committed to ensuring that its policies reflect the needs and aspirations of all citizens, including those with disabilities.
Advocacy in Action
This engagement underscores JONAPWD’s relentless advocacy for the rights and inclusion of persons with disabilities. By engaging directly with policymakers, the association continues to amplify the voices of its members and ensure that disability issues remain at the forefront of governance in Enugu State.
The meeting also reflects Governor Peter Mbah’s dedication to inclusive governance, with policies designed to create equal opportunities and address long-standing challenges faced by vulnerable groups in the state.
Moving Forward
The partnership between the government and JONAPWD signals a new era for persons with disabilities in Enugu State. With the promise of transparency, efficiency, and equal opportunities through initiatives like ENGIS, the future looks bright for individuals seeking to participate fully in the economic and social fabric of the state.
As the meeting concluded, the optimism within the disability community was palpable. “This meeting marks a significant step forward in JONAPWD’s advocacy efforts, demonstrating Governor Peter Mbah’s sincere commitment to inclusive governance. We are optimistic about the positive impact of these new policies on persons with disabilities in Enugu State,” Comrade Mba stated.
The meeting not only strengthened the partnership between JONAPWD and the government but also reinforced the need for continuous dialogue and collaboration to ensure that no one is left behind in the journey toward a more inclusive Enugu State.
