Edo state house of Assembly passes disability law

Edo State House of Assembly has on resumption of plenary, considered the fifth alteration of forty-four (44) Bill transmission of the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

The consideration came after the House dissolved into the Committee of the whole as moved by Hon. Okhuarobo and seconded by the Deputy speaker, Rt. Hon. Roland Asoro.

Members dissected each altered Bill one after the other after which a unanimous decision to pass the amendment Bill was arrived at.

Speaker, Rt Hon Marcus Onobun thereafter requested clean copies of the Resolution be sent to relevant Agencies.

Also at plenary the house enacted a Bill for a Law to ensure the full integration of persons with disabilities into society and the establishment of its Commission.

The Bill passed its second and third reading after the presentation of the report by the chairman of the committee on Rules, Business and Government house, Hon. Henry Okhuarobo, member representing Ikpoba Okha constituency.

The House soon after dissolved into a Committee of the whole to deliberate on the findings and the one point recommendation.

The speaker, Rt. Hon. Marcus Onobun said the House was eager to pass the all important bill as he commended the Committee for a well detailed and thorough report.

The Bill is aimed at protecting individuals with disabilities, prohibit all forms of discrimination, as well as formulating of appropriate policies and modalities for educational and social development of persons with disabilities.

The Law is to be cited as the Edo state Disability Law 2022.The speaker thereafter requested that clean copies of the Bill be sent to the state Governor, Godwin Obaseki for his assent.

On a sad note, Hon. Okhuarobo formally announced the demise of his Predecessor, Hon. Jude Ise-Idehen a two time member of Edo state House of Assembly, requesting the house observe a minute silence in his honour.

Mr. Speaker said the news came as a rude shock to him as he described Hon Ise-Idehen as an astute politician, a committed family man and a friend to all.Until his death, late Hon. Ise-Idehen was the member Representing Ikpoba Okha and Egor Federal constituency at the House of Representatives.

Hon. Ephraim Aluebhosele, member representing Igueben constituency moved the motion for Adjournment, seconded by the Chief whip, Hon. Emma Okoduwa of Esan North-East II. Consequently, plenary was adjourned to Monday 18th July, 2022.
