The European Centre for Electoral Support and Nasarawa State Independent Electoral Commission has called on women and people with disabilities in the state to be involved in the electoral processes for the development of Nasarawa and Nigeria.
Speaking on Tuesday in Lafia at a one-day training workshop on Inclusivity for Women, Youths and Persons With Disabilities In Electoral Processes, the ECES Project Coordinator, Hamza Fassi-Fihri, said that the training was organized because women, youths and PWDs are important pillars of the nation and their voices have to be heard just like any other citizens.
“The society has to invest efforts to ensure that women, youths and PLWDs have equal access to voting rights. Not only because they greatly represent the population but because they are part of the society and are important pillars in the nation,” he said.
Chairman of NASIEC, Ayuba Usman-Wandai, while speaking at the event, called on women and youths who formed the bulk of the voting strength and persons with disabilities to come out en masse on October 6, 2021, to fully participate in electing who represents them as Chairmen of the 13 local government areas and councillors of the 147 wards in the state.
“It’s the hope of the Commission that the outcome of today’s training which I am quite sure is rich both in content and methodology will provide these categories of persons for today’s workshop the required better experiences to mobilize their members for October 6, 2021, Councils Elections,” he said.
Representatives of persons with disabilities, youths and women who attended the training workshop expressed gratitude to ECES and NASIEC for the training and assured that their members would be mobilized to participate in the forthcoming local government polls and 2023 general elections.
