DRAC Enhances Knowledge of Teachers On Inclusive Education and Child Protection

Disability Rights Advocacy Center (DRAC) has organized a One Day sensitization workshop meeting of Teachers On Inclusive Education and Child Protection.

The program is part of activities under DRAC’s Education for All project supported by The Leprosy Mission Nigeria with funding from Liliane Fonds to promote the implementation of National Policy On Inclusive Education.

Micheal Mulungi Brian, a program officer at DRAC who represented the Executive Director, DRAC, Dr. Irene Ojugo Patrick-Ogbogu told TQM that the objective of the sensitization meeting is to improve the participants understanding of inclusive education and child protection and to drive commitments on inclusive education in their operations.

He also said that from the conversation with the participants, there is need to engage school administrators and the policy makers more on inclusive education. Administrators and Policy Makers like Education Boards, Examination Management Boards like JAMB and WAEC and other key stakeholders with education sector because in as much as the training is to improve the knowledge of the teachers on inclusive education, there is nothing much the teachers can do on enforcing the implementation of the policy.

Mr. Micheal stated that the key takeaway from the meeting is that most of the Stakeholders do not know the difference between inclusive school and integrated school. Their picture about inclusive education is all about integration.

They thought that it is a situation where children with disabilities and children without disabilities are in the same class learning without introducing special learning techniques and devices to enhance the learning ability of the children with disabilities in the class.

The Participants were teachers from different schools in FCT and some major stakeholders like FCT Scholarship Board, Education Secretariat FCT and Federal Ministry Of Education.

They were taken through overview of DRAC and. Education for all project, Concept of Inclusive Education and the interactive session to get commitments from the participants.
