Abia State Governor, Dr. Alex Otti, has been lauded for his remarkable efforts and commitment to creating an inclusive and empowering environment for the citizens of Abia State. His vision for an all-inclusive, prosperous, and discrimination-free society has garnered widespread acclaim.
David Anyaele, Chairman of the Abia State Commission for the Welfare of Disabled Persons, expressed his admiration for Governor Otti’s dedication shortly after the screening and confirmation of the commission members by the Abia State House of Assembly on Tuesday.
Anyaele, a prominent disability activist, emphasized that the establishment of the specialized Commission marks a significant milestone in the fight against discriminatory practices in Abia State. He pointed out that the Commission’s primary goal is to dismantle the attitudinal, environmental, and institutional barriers that prevent Abians with disabilities from participating equally in society.
“The coming on board of the specialized Commission will ensure the removal of attitudinal, environmental, and institutional barriers that hinder Abians with disabilities from participating in society on an equal basis,” Anyaele stated.
He further outlined that the Commission would work closely with the government to ensure that all Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) incorporate inclusive practices in their activities and programs. Anyaele extended his gratitude to Governor Otti for his pioneering efforts in establishing the Welfare of Disabled Persons Commission, which he described as a significant step toward eliminating discrimination against persons with disabilities.
“Governor Otti has broken the barrier of discrimination against persons with disabilities through the establishment of the Welfare of Disabled Persons Commission. This initiative will ensure that all government activities and programs are inclusive and considerate of the needs of persons with disabilities,” Anyaele remarked.
The Abia State House of Assembly also confirmed other key members of the Welfare of Disabled Persons Commission, including Stanley Onyebuchi, Emenike Amakwe, Chinenye Ogboso, and Ijeoma Harriet Okonkwo. These individuals, alongside Anyaele, are expected to drive the Commission’s agenda and collaborate with various stakeholders to promote the rights and welfare of persons with disabilities in Abia State.
The creation of the Welfare of Disabled Persons Commission is seen as a significant achievement in the ongoing efforts to create a more inclusive and equitable society. The Commission aims to ensure that persons with disabilities are not only included in mainstream society but are also provided with the necessary support and opportunities to thrive.
Governor Otti’s initiative has received widespread praise from various quarters, highlighting his commitment to fostering an environment where every citizen, regardless of their abilities, can maximize their potential. This inclusive approach is expected to drive significant positive change in Abia State, promoting a culture of acceptance and support for all individuals.
As the Commission begins its work, there is a palpable sense of optimism among advocates and citizens alike. The hope is that this new era of inclusivity and empowerment will pave the way for a brighter and more equitable future for all Abians, particularly those with disabilities.
In the words of David Anyaele, “This is not just a victory for persons with disabilities; it is a victory for the entire state of Abia. It is a testament to the fact that when we work together to break down barriers, we can build a society that is truly inclusive and supportive of all its members.”
The establishment of the Welfare of Disabled Persons Commission is a clear indication of Governor Otti’s vision and leadership in championing the rights and welfare of persons with disabilities. It serves as a model for other states to follow in their quest to create a more inclusive and supportive society.
