TQM report,
Lois Auta, a female disability rights advocate while representing community of persons with disability in the public hearing for constitutional review, said that 15 percent of the seats in the federal, state and local parliament should be reserved or allocated to qualified persons with disabilities.
“Citing Section 42(4) which is prohibition of discrimination, she said that persons with disabilities want 15 percent of seats on the national and state houses of assemblies and local government houses to be reserved exclusively for qualified persons with disabilities – taking into account the different types of disabilities.
“Sign language interpretation and their means of artistic communication should be arranged in every strategic meeting and activities of the national assembly.” she also added.
Another representative of the persons with disabilities at the public hearing which hailed in Abuja on 3rd of June, 2021 was Jake Epelle, The founder and CEO of The Albino Foundation.
They also demand that sections 14, 15, 17, 18, 55 and 97 should be inclusive of issues of Nigerians with disabilities.
The Community of Persons with disabilities are in high expectation that this constitutional review is a window ofv opportunity to improve the situation of persons with disabilities through the constitution, because the Discrimination against persons with disabilities (Prohibition) Act 2021 have not provided all the opportunities for persons with disabilities perhaps this is an opportunity for more wins.
