Coalition advocates for the formulation of National Policy on Sign Language

…Seek for recognition of sign language as an official language in Nigeria

The National Coalition Partners under the Disability Rights Fund project comprising the Nigeria National Association of the Deaf (NNAD), the Association of Sign Language Interpreters of Nigeria (ASLIN), and the Lionheart Ability Leaders International Foundation (LALIF) paid an advocacy visit to the Executive Secretary, National Commission for Persons with Disabilities on the 8th April 2022.

The purpose of their visit is to check the Commission’s support towards official recognition of Nigerian Sign Language (NSL) as an official Sign Language in Nigeria and discuss possible ways to achieve the targets.

The outcome of the meeting were very encouraging as the ES assured us of the Commission’s full support in the policy formulation and implementation.

The Coalition however, set to begin with the formulation of National Policy on Sign Language.

The meeting witnessed the presence of the Executive Secretary, Mr. James Lalu, NNAD President, Dr. Chidi Olujie, NNAD Vice President, Mr. Haruna Muhammad and Engr Timothy Adejumo as well as the representatives of the ASLIN and LALIF in person’s of Mr. Timothy Tinat and Mr. Solomon Okelola, respectively.
