TQM Report,
As we commemorate International Children’s Day, the special school sector has been marginalized in the debate around inclusive education as it is seen as redundant in a fully inclusive education system.
The Executive Director, Inclusive Friends Association (IFA), Grace Jerry believes that for inclusion to work, the special school sector needs to be engaged and working with mainstream schools for the benefit of children with disabilities, especially in the arena of providing suitable education that is not just vocational but also supports particular kinds of disability.
In this press statement signed by Stephen Idoko, a program officer in IFA, the group strongly believe that Special schools have a wealth of knowledge and experience that could be shared to make inclusion work better and provide quality education for all and indeed ensure that children are learning in the most suitable setting.
Examples of best practices include heads of special schools working with mainstream schools in the same catchment to ensure children can move between them when necessary.
