Abuja, Nigeria – A significant breakthrough in inclusive education was witnessed today at the first-ever inclusive Knowledge Zone Science Competition organized by the Nigerian Television Authority Knowledge (NTAK) in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT). This historic event marks a pivotal moment in the pursuit of equitable education, ensuring that children with disabilities are provided with the same opportunities as their peers.
An Eye-Opening Exclusion
For years, the NTAK Knowledge Zone Science Competition has been a celebrated platform for Nigerian hearing students to showcase their scientific prowess and innovative thinking. However, a troubling observation was made by producer of Beyond Barrier On NTA, Janet Fasakin during this year’s competition and the subsequent Annual Children’s Day event, where NTA usually presents prizes to the winners live on air. Students with disabilities were conspicuously absent from both events.
This exclusion did not sit well with many, particularly those who believe in the power of inclusive education. One such advocate is a passionate member of the organizing team who felt a deep-seated need to bring children with disabilities into the limelight. “Disability should not limit us from being part of activities,” they stated, emphasizing the urgent need for change.
Championing Inclusive Education
Inspired by the Sustainable Development Goal 4 (SDG 4), which calls for inclusive and equitable quality education and promotes lifelong learning opportunities for all, NTAK has made a groundbreaking decision. They proudly unveiled the first-ever inclusive competition for children with disabilities in the FCT. The guiding principle of this initiative is to “leave no child behind,” ensuring that every child, regardless of their background, race, or disability, has access to quality education and equal opportunities to learn and succeed.
Unleashing Potential Beyond Barriers
The theme of this year’s competition, Beyond Barriers, embodies the spirit of inclusion and the belief that every child can achieve greatness when given the chance. “These children with disabilities, when given opportunities like this, can thrive and perform magic beyond our imagination,” Janet Fasakin said.
The event saw an array of special students from various schools competing with vigor and enthusiasm. Representing Kuje School for the Deaf, Jabi School for the Blind, and the School for Special Needs Kuje, these students demonstrated remarkable abilities and captivated the audience with their exceptional performances.
“We speak Inclusion and our language is breaking barriers and bringing out opportunities. Where you see barriers, we see opportunities; where you see disabilities, we see ability, Janet continued, expressing their joy at seeing these children excel and perform extraordinarily.
A Heartfelt Thank You
The successful execution of this event was made possible through the invaluable support of numerous individuals and organizations. Special thanks go to #DataLeadAfrica, whose sponsorship was crucial in overcoming the challenges faced in organizing the competition. Their unwavering support ensured that the event could proceed smoothly.
Gratitude also goes out to the dedicated colleagues, friends, teachers, and students from Kuje School for the Deaf, Jabi School for the Blind, and the School for Special Needs Kuje, as well as the staff of NTAK. Their commitment and hard work made this inclusive competition a reality despite various obstacles.
Looking Ahead
The culmination of this inspiring event will be celebrated at the NTA Children’s Day Funfair on Thursday, where the winners will receive their well-deserved prizes live on air. This live transmission will not only showcase their achievements but also serve as a powerful reminder that inclusion is possible and necessary.
As we move forward, let us remember that every child, regardless of their abilities, deserves the chance to shine. This event is a testament to what can be achieved when we embrace inclusivity and provide equal opportunities for all. Together, we can continue to break barriers and create a world where every child has the chance to succeed.
This historic day is a stepping stone towards a more inclusive and equitable future for Nigerian education. The positive impact of today’s event will resonate far beyond the competition, inspiring other organizations to follow suit and champion the cause of inclusive education.
