Breaking Barriers: 61 Visually-Impaired Candidates Write JAMB’s UTME Exams in Enugu

In a remarkable display of inclusivity and determination, 61 visually-impaired candidates defied odds to sit for the 2024 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) organized by the Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB) at the Enugu Special Centre.

These candidates, alongside 577 others nationwide, were part of the JAMB Equal Opportunity Group (JEOG) Committee, ensuring that individuals with special needs have an equal opportunity to pursue their dreams of higher education.

Held at the Law Faculty of the University of Nigeria Enugu Campus (UNEC), the examination attracted candidates from nine states across the South-East and South-South regions, including Abia, Anambra, Ebonyi, Enugu, Imo, Rivers, Cross River, Akwa Ibom, and Bayelsa States.

Despite challenges, the visually-impaired candidates exhibited resilience and resourcefulness, utilizing various writing aides such as brailles, typewriters, stylos, and pens to tackle the exam.

Speaking on the significance of the visually-impaired UTME program, Prof. Mosto Onuoha, Coordinator of the UTME Enugu Special Centre and former Deputy Vice Chancellor of UNN, emphasized JAMB’s commitment to providing equal opportunities for all, especially persons with disabilities.

He highlighted the unique nature of the exam, which involves reading questions aloud for visually-impaired candidates, who then provide answers within extended time limits.

Prof. Okey Okechukwu, another member of the JEOG Committee and Provost of Federal College of Education (Technical), Isu, Ebonyi State, commended JAMB’s efforts in supporting the candidates by covering transportation, feeding, and accommodation expenses.

Expressing gratitude for the special treatment, candidate Mr. Obinna Eze lauded JAMB’s commitment to the welfare of physically challenged individuals, noting the exceptional care and attention provided by the JEOG committee members.

In a call to action, Prof. Okechukwu urged regional governors, local government chairpersons, and traditional rulers to raise awareness among people with disabilities, encouraging them to take advantage of JAMB’s initiatives and participate in future examinations.

With heartfelt appreciation and renewed determination, the visually-impaired candidates exemplify resilience, proving that with support and inclusivity, barriers can be overcome, and dreams can be achieved in the pursuit of higher education.
