Advocating for Inclusive Governance: Ekiti State SSA on Disability Leads Charge at JAAC Meeting

In a stirring call for inclusive governance and social services, Hon. Akin Olugbenga Obanise, the Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Disability Matters, has fervently advocated for the inclusion of persons with disabilities (PWDs) in all facets of governance and public life in Ekiti State.

Addressing attendees at a recent Joint Account Allocation Committee (JAAC) meeting, Hon. Obanise commended the state government, under the leadership of Governor Biodun Abayomi Oyebanji, for its unwavering commitment to disability inclusion. He highlighted several groundbreaking initiatives aimed at empowering PWDs, including the appointment of the state’s first-ever Special Adviser on Special Education and Social Inclusion, renovations of special schools, and dedicated support during the fuel subsidy removal.

However, amidst the praise for progress made, Hon. Obanise shed light on the persistent challenges faced by PWDs, ranging from discrimination and poverty to unemployment and lack of accessibility to public facilities. With unwavering determination, he called upon the JAAC to lend their support to address these pressing issues, urging for collective action in various critical areas.

One of the key areas of focus highlighted by Hon. Obanise was the urgent need for political appointments that reflect the diversity of the Ekiti State populace, ensuring representation and participation of PWDs in decision-making processes. Additionally, he emphasized the importance of social security inclusion, advocating for the creation of Disability Desk Units within government agencies to facilitate access to services and support.

Data collation, employment quotas, and the provision of accessible infrastructure were also identified as crucial elements in promoting disability inclusion. Hon. Obanise passionately appealed to the JAAC to prioritize these initiatives, recognizing their pivotal role in advancing the rights and welfare of PWDs in the state.

Expressing gratitude for the opportunity to address the JAAC, Hon. Obanise conveyed optimism in their support for the disability community’s well-being. He called upon them to demonstrate unwavering commitment to disability inclusion in governance, setting a precedent for similar initiatives across Nigeria.

As the meeting concluded, the impassioned plea for inclusive governance echoed through the halls, leaving a resounding call to action for all stakeholders to join hands in building a more inclusive and equitable society for all residents of Ekiti State.
