Accessible Aviation: Vice President, Humanitarian Affairs Minister unveil CARE’s Stairclimber Aisle Wheelchair

The Honourable Minister of Humanitarian affairs, Disaster Management and Social Development, Haijah Sadiya Farouk and Vice President, Representative George Akume, minister of Special Duties launched Stairclimber Aisle Wheelchair at the first National Disability Summit organized by National Commission for Persons With Persons With Disabilities (NCPWD) in commemoration of 2021 International Day for Persons With Disabilities (IDPD).

The wheelchair was presented by the CEO, Centre for Ability Rehabilitation and Empowerment CARE, Dr. Chike Okogwu as part of their project “Accessible Aviation” supported by Oxfam Voice Nigeria.

The project came out of incessant discrimination against Persons with disabilities by airline operators and the aisle wheelchair is to model what should be provided at the airports across the country to assist wheelchair users board and disembark from the aircraft.

This will curb the challenge carrying a wheelchair user up the aircraft which has resulted to extra costs to wheelchair users while embarking on air travels.

Recall that the CARE and FAAN in partnership ensure that disability desk officers are stationed at the airport to assist persons with disabilities of different forms to access the services of different airline operators without any challenge.
