LAGOS, Nigeria — Nigeria is set to make history on Thursday, September 10, with the country’s first-ever Wheelchair American Football Exhibition, an initiative aimed at breaking barriers and opening new sporting opportunities for persons with disabilities.
The historic exhibition will take place at the Outdoor Basketball Arena of the National Institute for Sports (NIS), National Stadium, Surulere, Lagos, and is being organised by American Football for Elite Development (AFEDEV).
A New Sporting Opportunity for Persons With Disabilities
The exhibition will introduce Nigerians to an adaptive form of American football designed to promote inclusion, equal opportunity, leadership and meaningful community participation for persons with disabilities.
Wheelchair American football traces its origins to the United States, where the sport has developed over the years as an adaptive sporting activity. It is typically played on an indoor court, with athletes competing from manual or power wheelchairs.
For Nigeria, the exhibition represents more than a sporting event. Organisers say it is an opportunity to demonstrate that disability should not be a barrier to participation, competition or sporting excellence.
A Historic Moment for Nigeria
AFEDEV has described the exhibition as a historic milestone in Nigeria’s sporting landscape, particularly for persons with disabilities who have traditionally had limited access to adaptive sporting opportunities.
Government agencies, diplomatic missions, corporate organisations, educational institutions, organisations of persons with disabilities, development partners and members of the media have been invited to witness the event.
The organisers hope the exhibition will attract wider attention to the potential of adaptive sports and encourage investment in accessible sporting facilities, training and opportunities for athletes with disabilities.
Expanding the American Football Movement
The event also comes at a time when efforts are intensifying to expand American football in Nigeria.
Organisations including the American Football Association of Nigeria have, in recent years, worked to develop flag and tackle football at the grassroots level, introducing the sport to more young Nigerians across the country.
AFEDEV’s initiative could take that growth a step further by bringing persons with disabilities into the expanding American football community.
Beyond the Game
The significance of the exhibition extends beyond the football field.
For many disability advocates, inclusive sports can provide pathways to confidence, leadership, social connection, physical activity and greater visibility. It can also challenge outdated perceptions about what persons with disabilities can achieve.
