IDPD 2024: Ogun State Empowers 150 Persons with Disabilities

In a remarkable show of support and commitment, the Ogun State Government, through the Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development, has empowered approximately 150 Persons With Disabilities (PWDs) across the state. The initiative, held in celebration of the 2024 International Day of Persons with Disabilities, marks a significant step towards fostering an inclusive and sustainable future for individuals with disabilities.

Themed “Amplifying the Leadership of Persons with Disabilities for an Inclusive and Sustainable Future,” this year’s celebration was not only a commemoration of the resilience of PWDs, but also a demonstration of Ogun State’s dedication to creating opportunities that promote equity, independence, and self-sufficiency for its citizens with special needs.

Empowering Lives Through Practical Support

During the empowerment ceremony, a variety of essential items were distributed to the beneficiaries, aimed at enhancing their livelihoods and supporting their entrepreneurial ventures. The gifts included Deep Freezers, Grinding Machines, Generating Sets, Clippers, Braille Machines, Walking Sticks, Wheelchairs, and much more.

Adijat Adeleye, the Commissioner for the Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development, expressed her unwavering support for PWDs, underscoring the administration’s commitment to improving their lives. “The empowerment you see today is a testament to the Prince Dapo Abiodun-led administration’s commitment to prioritizing inclusion and equity for persons with disabilities,” Adeleye said, stressing that this initiative was just one of many steps taken to ensure a lasting positive impact in the lives of PWDs across the state.

“This empowerment is designed not only to make a tangible difference in your lives but to reaffirm our unwavering support for you. We will continue to stand by you, ensuring that every person, regardless of ability, can achieve their fullest potential,” she added.

A Call for Self-Investment and Growth

In her address, Mrs. Adejumoke Adewole, the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry, took the opportunity to encourage the beneficiaries to invest in themselves and pursue self-development. She urged them to acquire new skills, embrace technology, and remain open to new ideas to stay competitive in today’s ever-evolving world.

“Embrace technology, learn new skills, and invest in your growth,” Adewole advised. “Your future is in your hands, and the Ministry will continue to provide the necessary support to help you succeed.”

She emphasized that the Ministry was committed to ensuring that every person with disabilities in Ogun State had access to the tools, resources, and opportunities needed to thrive in society, regardless of the challenges they may face.

Encouraging Leadership and Self-Worth

The event also featured an inspiring speech from Dr. Kunle Ashimi, the former Chairman of the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA), who shared his perspective on leadership and self-worth. Speaking on the theme of the day, Dr. Ashimi urged PWDs to reject any notion of limitation based on physical appearance and instead focus on their intellect, wisdom, and leadership abilities.

“Leadership is not about how you look; it is about what you have in your mind and how you use your wisdom to lead,” Dr. Ashimi said, encouraging the beneficiaries to aspire to leadership roles and positions of influence. “Never belittle yourself or allow others to intimidate you. You are capable of achieving great things, and leadership is within your reach.”

His words resonated deeply with the audience, offering a sense of empowerment and motivating them to push beyond any perceived limitations.

Acknowledging the Government’s Support

In separate goodwill messages, two influential figures from the PWD community in Ogun State, Micheal Ebohor, Chairman of the Joint National Association of Persons With Disabilities (JONAPWD), and Olori Aminat Matemilola, expressed their deep appreciation for the state government’s unwavering support for persons with disabilities.

Ebohor commended the administration for prioritizing the well-being of PWDs, highlighting the positive impact of the government’s efforts in creating job opportunities and enhancing the quality of life for individuals with disabilities.

“We are grateful for the Ogun State Government’s efforts to ensure that we, as persons with disabilities, are not left behind. The support we receive today is invaluable in helping us provide for our families and live more independent lives,” Ebohor stated. “This is a step in the right direction for inclusivity, and we hope this continues in the years to come.”

Olori Aminat Matemilola echoed similar sentiments, thanking the government for providing opportunities for PWDs to become self-sufficient and contribute to society. “The recognition of our efforts and the opportunities provided by the state government give us the ability to be independent, support our families, and live with dignity,” she said.

Looking Ahead: A Future of Inclusivity and Empowerment

The Ogun State Government’s celebration of the International Day of Persons with Disabilities was not just an event but a declaration of its commitment to creating a more inclusive, sustainable future for all citizens, regardless of their abilities. Through tangible acts of support and empowerment, the state is paving the way for PWDs to thrive and contribute meaningfully to society.

With this year’s initiative, the government has shown that it is not just about celebrating people with disabilities on a single day but about making lasting investments in their well-being and success. As they move forward, the beneficiaries of this empowerment are not only empowered by the items they received but also by the knowledge that their state is dedicated to providing them with opportunities to excel and lead.

The day’s events were a powerful reminder that inclusion, empowerment, and leadership are not just lofty ideals but achievable goals for every person, regardless of their challenges.
