The Kebbi State Government has taken a bold step in fostering inclusivity and economic empowerment by disbursing N100 million to 1,000 persons living with disabilities. The initiative, which coincided with the commemoration of the International Day for Persons with Disabilities, underscores the administration’s dedication to uplifting marginalized groups and creating pathways to self-reliance.
Empowering the Marginalized
In a grand event held in Birnin Kebbi, the state capital, each of the 1,000 beneficiaries from the 21 Local Government Areas of the state received N100,000. The funds are intended to encourage entrepreneurship and provide the resources needed for profitable ventures, effectively improving the beneficiaries’ quality of life.
Distributing the grants, Hajiya Zainab Nasare Nasir Idris, the wife of the Kebbi State Governor, reiterated the administration’s commitment to improving the welfare of persons with disabilities. She stated that the initiative is part of Governor Nasir Idris’ broader vision to integrate persons with disabilities into mainstream society.
“This initiative aligns with Governor Nasir Idris’ policy to uplift the welfare of persons with disability by enhancing their livelihoods and integrating them into society,” the First Lady said.
Action-Oriented Leadership
Highlighting the administration’s achievements, Hajiya Zainab Nasare emphasized the establishment of the Commission for Persons with Disability and the provision of grants as tangible steps toward creating a more inclusive society.
“We are determined to take you off the streets and minimize begging. This N100,000 grant is not just a handout; it is an opportunity for you to invest in profitable ventures and achieve self-reliance,” she stated, urging beneficiaries to use the funds wisely.
She further noted that the government would closely monitor how the funds are utilized, ensuring that they make a lasting impact on the recipients’ lives.
Voices of Gratitude
The Chairman of the Kebbi State Persons with Disability Rights Commission, Alhaji Anas Malami Gwandu, expressed profound gratitude to Governor Idris for prioritizing the welfare of persons with disabilities. He acknowledged the inclusion of various disability groups, including the blind, deaf, lepers, and those with paralysis, in the initiative.
Gwandu also called on the beneficiaries to take the government’s efforts seriously by adhering to laws discouraging street begging. “This is a new dawn for persons with disabilities in Kebbi State,” he said. “Education and economic empowerment are vital tools for our progress.”
Support from Traditional Leaders
The Emir of Gwandu, Alhaji Muhammadu Iliyasu Bashar, represented by Ubandoman Gwandu, Alhaji Sadiq Ibrahim Sadiq, lauded Governor Idris for his compassion and vision. He urged the beneficiaries to seize the opportunity to transform their lives, emphasizing the need for accountability and judicious use of the grants.
Recognition of Excellence
A standout moment of the event was the recognition of Abdulhakim Abubakar, a wheelchair user and a third-year student of Education Chemistry at Federal University Birnin Kebbi. Abdulhakim’s remarkable story of perseverance earned him a motorcycle and a promise of automatic employment as a teacher from the Governor.
Described as a “symbol of ability in disability,” Abdulhakim’s achievements served as an inspiration to all in attendance, reinforcing the message that disability is not a barrier to success.
A Unified Effort
Commissioner for Special Duties, Alhaji Zayyanu Umar Aliero, and Special Adviser to the Governor on Special Duties, Alhaji Shafi’u Zauro, commended the Governor and First Lady for their dedication to the welfare of vulnerable groups, including persons with disabilities and orphans.
“This administration has set a standard in prioritizing the needs of those who are often overlooked. The impact of this initiative will resonate for years to come,” Aliero remarked.
Hope for the Future
The disbursement of N100 million is more than a financial intervention—it is a beacon of hope for persons with disabilities in Kebbi State. By addressing their economic challenges, the state government is not only improving their quality of life but also fostering a sense of belonging and dignity.
As the beneficiaries embark on this new chapter, the event serves as a reminder that with inclusive policies and compassionate leadership, no one is truly left behind.
