In a powerful step towards fostering economic inclusion and empowerment, the Lagos State Office for Disability Affairs (LASODA) has registered 100 businesses owned by Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) and presented them with free Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC) certificates. This landmark initiative, unveiled during a two-day empowerment training for disability clusters, is part of a broader strategy to create a sustainable and inclusive business environment for PWDs in Lagos State.
The training, held at the STO Resource Centre in Alausa, featured the theme “Promoting Inclusive Business: Enhancing Opportunities for Persons with Disabilities in Lagos.” It was a vibrant gathering of entrepreneurs, disability advocates, and government officials, all united by a shared vision to elevate the economic status of PWDs through entrepreneurship and skill acquisition.
Elevating Standards and Shattering Stereotypes
Speaking at the event, LASODA’s General Manager, Mrs. Adenike Oyetunde-Lawal, emphasized the program’s focus on empowering PWDs with the tools they need to thrive in the competitive business landscape. Represented by Mrs. Omolade Sonubi, Director of Administration and Human Resources, she highlighted how the initiative aims to break stereotypes often associated with PWDs, replacing them with stories of innovation, resilience, and economic success.
“Our goal is to empower PWDs, eliminate the culture of begging, and encourage ownership of businesses that are not only sustainable but impactful,” Oyetunde-Lawal stated. “By registering these businesses and providing free CAC certificates, we are enhancing their credibility, promoting financial inclusion, and positioning them for greater economic opportunities.”
Empowering Entrepreneurs Across Diverse Sectors
The initiative targets entrepreneurs across various sectors, including soap and perfume production, fashion design, and packaging. In addition to the distribution of CAC certificates, participants received comprehensive training in entrepreneurship, branding, taxation, record-keeping, and business development. These sessions were designed to equip them with the skills and knowledge needed to navigate the complexities of the business world.
One of the highlights of the event was the recognition of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu‘s administration for its unwavering commitment to inclusive policies. LASODA’s programs under his leadership have continued to open doors for PWDs, providing access to vocational training, self-employment opportunities, and pathways to financial independence.
Building Bridges to Economic Empowerment
The program does not end with certification and training. LASODA has pledged to monitor the progress of these businesses closely. Plans are already in motion to connect entrepreneurs with the Lagos State Employment Trust Fund and commercial banks, facilitating access to soft loans and grants. This collaborative approach ensures that PWDs have the financial resources to scale their businesses and compete effectively in the broader economy.
“Empowering PWDs is not just about skill acquisition; it’s about ensuring they have the tools, resources, and opportunities to contribute meaningfully to society,” Oyetunde-Lawal remarked. “This program represents a turning point in how we view and support PWDs in Lagos.”
Overcoming Challenges, Driving Impact
The empowerment initiative comes against the backdrop of significant challenges faced by PWDs, including poverty, unemployment, and societal stigma. Recognizing these barriers, LASODA is determined to provide long-term solutions through entrepreneurship and economic empowerment. The training program underscored the importance of robust business management skills, which are essential for building successful enterprises.
“Our objective is clear: to empower PWDs to compete effectively with other entrepreneurs by enhancing their skills and equipping them to meet the demands of the modern business world,” Oyetunde-Lawal emphasized.
A Call to Action for PWD Entrepreneurs
As the event concluded, the participants left with more than certificates and skills; they carried a renewed sense of purpose and determination. LASODA encouraged them to focus on self-improvement, remain disciplined, and leverage the state’s continuous support to overcome economic challenges.
“We are not just handing out certificates; we are handing out opportunities for transformation,” Oyetunde-Lawal said in her closing remarks. “With the state’s support, these entrepreneurs can overcome any economic hurdle and achieve unprecedented success.”
A Pathway to a More Inclusive Economy
This initiative by LASODA is a bold step toward creating an inclusive and equitable economy in Lagos State. By empowering PWDs with the resources to succeed, the agency is not only transforming lives but also setting a benchmark for other states to follow.
As the 100 newly empowered entrepreneurs embark on their journeys, their stories of resilience, innovation, and success will undoubtedly inspire others and contribute to the broader goal of making Lagos a truly inclusive economic hub.
