In a groundbreaking ceremony that underscored the importance of fostering an inclusive society, the House of Representatives Committee on Disability Matters honored organizations championing disability inclusion across Nigeria. The event, held on Tuesday, November 12, 2024, at the National Assembly, celebrated the unwavering commitment of select organizations to improving the lives of persons with disabilities (PWDs) through their advocacy and initiatives.
A Tribute to Changemakers
The Chairman of the House Committee on Disability Matters, Hon. Dr. Ayinla Basharu Dawodu, led the occasion, emphasizing the significance of acknowledging and rewarding efforts that promote inclusivity. “This award is a way of recognizing the outstanding contributions of these organizations to our legislative activities aimed at advancing disability inclusion,” Dr. Dawodu said in his keynote speech. “We are inspired by their commitment, but the journey is far from over. Much work remains to be done to achieve full disability inclusion in Nigeria.”
Dr. Dawodu urged the recognized organizations to build on their achievements and continue supporting legislative and grassroots efforts that empower PWDs. He highlighted that their role was crucial in ensuring the full implementation of the Discrimination Against Persons with Disabilities (Prohibition) Act, a landmark law that protects the rights of PWDs and promotes equal opportunities.
Enforcing Disability Law Compliance
In a significant announcement, Dr. Dawodu revealed that the committee had secured the backing of the Speaker of the House, Rt. Hon. Tajudeen Abbas, to enforce compliance with the Disability Act among ministries, departments, and agencies (MDAs). “We now have the mandate to hold MDAs accountable for implementing the provisions of this vital legislation,” he stated.
He also called on development partners, disability advocacy groups, and other stakeholders to collaborate in achieving this goal. “We cannot do this alone. We need your continued support to ensure that every corner of Nigeria is accessible and inclusive for persons with disabilities,” he added.
Furthermore, Dr. Dawodu informed the audience of an important procedural change regarding petitions on disability rights violations. Previously, the House Committee on Public Petitions handled all complaints. However, in a bid to streamline the process and ensure faster responses, the Speaker empowered each committee to address petitions within their respective mandates.
“We are now open to receiving petitions related to any violation of the Disability Act,” Dr. Dawodu explained. “This change is a step towards ensuring that the concerns of PWDs are addressed promptly and effectively.”
A Gathering of Disability Advocates
The event drew a vibrant crowd of disability rights leaders, advocates, and stakeholders. Representatives from prominent organizations such as the National Democratic Institute (NDI), Westminster Foundation for Democracy, CBM Global, Oxfam (under their Voice Project in Nigeria), and TAF Africa were present to receive their well-deserved accolades.
Moderated by the renowned business expert and disability rights advocate, Dr. Chike Okogwu, the event was both inspiring and reflective. Key leaders in the disability community, including Chief Ayuba Gufwan, ES, NCPWD, Ekaete Umoh, immediate past country, CBM Global, Grace Jerry, ED, The Inclusive Friends Association(IFA) , Comrade Chris Agbo, ED, The Qualitative Magazine, Hon. Gideon Michael, JONAPWD Zonal Vice Chairman, and Donald Unanka, ED Potters Gallery Initiative among others, shared their insights on the progress made and the challenges that lie ahead in the fight for disability inclusion.
A Celebration of Talent and Resilience
The ceremony was not just a platform for speeches and awards; it was also a celebration of the resilience and creativity of persons with disabilities. Performances by entertainers with disabilities added a vibrant and uplifting tone to the event, showcasing the immense talent within the community. These acts served as a reminder of the capabilities of PWDs and the importance of creating spaces for their talents to shine.
A Call to Action
As the event concluded, the atmosphere was filled with a renewed sense of purpose and determination. Hon. Dr. Dawodu urged all stakeholders to continue their advocacy for PWDs, stressing that collaboration and commitment are vital to creating a more inclusive Nigeria.
“This ceremony is more than a recognition of past efforts; it is a call to action for the future. Together, we can build a society where every person, regardless of ability, can thrive,” Dr. Dawodu declared.
For the attendees, the awards symbolized more than just recognition—they were a reminder of the transformative power of advocacy, partnership, and inclusion. With organizations, advocates, and lawmakers working in tandem, the vision of a truly inclusive Nigeria is steadily becoming a reality.
Moving Forward
The event not only highlighted the progress made but also served as a reminder of the work that still needs to be done. The recognition of these organizations is a testament to the impact of collective efforts in breaking down barriers for persons with disabilities. As the fight for inclusion continues, such moments of celebration and reflection provide the motivation to push forward.
The House of Representatives Committee on Disability Matters has set a precedent with this recognition, demonstrating that collaboration and acknowledgment are critical in the journey toward an inclusive future for all Nigerians.
