Ekiti JONAPWD Set to Make History with First-Ever Athletics Event for Persons with Disabilities

In a groundbreaking move to promote inclusion through sports, the Ekiti State chapter of the Joint National Association of Persons With Disabilities (JONAPWD) has announced its first-ever athletics competition for persons with disabilities (PWDs). The two-day event will take place on October 30th and 31st at the Oluyemi Kayode Stadium in Ado Ekiti, marking a historic moment for the disability community in the state.

The announcement was made during a press briefing held on Thursday, October 24th, at the Ekiti State Office of Disability Affairs, where organizers and association leaders expressed gratitude for the state government’s unprecedented support. The event promises to be a celebration of ability, resilience, and sportsmanship, with participants drawn from all 16 local government areas of the state.

Governor Oyebanji’s Unwavering Support

At the heart of this historic event is the support of Governor Biodun Abayomi Oyebanji, whose administration has championed the welfare of persons with disabilities. Coach Peter Ojo, the Chairman of the competition’s organizing committee, highlighted the significance of the governor’s involvement, stating, “This is the first time in the history of Ekiti State that the government has approved and endorsed a sports competition among persons with disabilities. Governor Oyebanji has set a precedent that will be remembered for years to come.”

Ojo further commended the state government for its commitment to the wellbeing of PWDs, noting that other welfare initiatives for association members have already been implemented. “The approval of this event demonstrates the administration’s genuine dedication to social inclusion, and we are excited to showcase the talent and potential of our athletes,” he said.

Athletics Events and Categories

The competition will feature a variety of athletic events, designed to accommodate participants from the four major disability categories:

  • The Deaf
  • The Blind
  • Persons With Physical Disability
  • Persons with Albinism

With no age restrictions for participants, the event aims to be as inclusive as possible, encouraging people from all demographics within the PWD community to compete. “This is an opportunity for everyone to participate, regardless of age or experience,” Ojo emphasized.

Facilities, Media Coverage, and Safety

To ensure the smooth running of the event, the organizing committee has made comprehensive preparations, including the provision of medical facilities, media coverage, and tight security. “We’ve put everything in place to guarantee a safe and successful competition,” the Ekiti State Para-Athletics coach assured.

He added that standout athletes would not only be awarded cash prizes, certificates, medals, and trophies, but also considered for future national sporting events. “We are scouting for exceptional talents during the event, and those who show promise will be recommended for national trials and competitions,” Ojo revealed.

Gratitude to the Governor and Stakeholders

Speaking at the press briefing, the Secretary of the organizing committee and Secretary of JONAPWD, Mr. Femi Oni, praised Governor Oyebanji for his unwavering support. “This event would not have been possible without the governor’s approval. His love for the disability community in Ekiti is evident, and I personally wish him six more years in office,” Oni said with gratitude.

He also extended appreciation to the Office of Special Education, Social Inclusion, and Disability Affairs for their continued support, stressing the importance of partnerships in driving social inclusion initiatives.

The Vice Chairman of the planning committee, Mr. Owolabi Kayode, and the acting Chairman of JONAPWD, Mr. Sesan Aina, echoed Oni’s sentiments, expressing deep appreciation to the governor for approving their proposal. “Governor Oyebanji has made history as the first governor to support sports competitions for persons with disabilities in Ekiti. This is a monumental step forward,” Aina stated.

A Celebration of Inclusion and Talent

The organizers are determined to ensure the event leaves a lasting legacy, with the aim of establishing it as an annual tradition. All cluster chairpersons and executives of JONAPWD, along with other key stakeholders, were present at the press conference, underscoring the importance of the event to the disability community.

“This competition is not just about winning medals—it’s about showing the world that persons with disabilities are capable, talented, and ready to contribute to society,” Ojo emphasized.

Looking Forward to a Landmark Event

As the countdown to the competition begins, excitement is building among participants and spectators alike. The event promises to be a landmark celebration of ability, breaking barriers, and promoting social inclusion through sports.

With the support of Governor Oyebanji’s administration and a robust organizing team, the first-ever athletics event for persons with disabilities in Ekiti is set to make history, paving the way for a more inclusive future in sports and beyond.

“October 30th and 31st will mark the beginning of a new era for disability sports in Ekiti State,” Oni concluded. “We are ready to make history.”
