Abia State Disability Commission Pledges Continued Support to NGOs Advocating for Disability Rights

Abia State Government Affirms Commitment to Empowering Persons with Disabilities

In a demonstration of its dedication to enhancing the welfare of Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) across the state, the Abia State Commission for the Welfare of Disabled Persons has reiterated its commitment to collaborating with and supporting Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) that provide critical services to the disability community. This statement was made during a courtesy visit by the See Through Humanitarian Foundation, a prominent NGO, to the Commission’s office in Umuahia.

Speaking during the visit, the Chairman of the Abia State Disability Commission, Mr. David Obinna Anyaele, emphasized that the Commission remains open and accessible to partnerships that can further the cause of PWDs in the state. He acknowledged the crucial role that NGOs play in promoting the welfare of individuals with disabilities and ensuring their inclusion in various sectors of society.

Commitment to Collaboration and Leadership Opportunities

Mr. Anyaele commended the See Through Humanitarian Foundation for its work in supporting the blind and visually impaired community in Abia, stating that the Commission would welcome any initiative that contributes to empowering the state’s disability population. He highlighted that under the leadership of Governor Dr. Alex Chioma Otti (OFR), Abia State is committed to ensuring that persons with disabilities not only enjoy their rights but also take up leadership roles and fully participate in the state’s development.

“The government of Dr. Alex Otti has shown clear intent in advancing the interests of the disability community by appointing a Special Assistant on Persons with Disabilities and by establishing the Abia State Commission for the Welfare of Disabled Persons. This Commission, which includes five persons with disabilities as board members, is tasked with advancing the welfare, inclusion, participation, and overall well-being of all Abians living with disabilities and their families,” Anyaele said.

He went on to emphasize that the Commission is determined to create pathways for PWDs to maximize their potential and contribute to the growth of the state, noting that Governor Otti’s administration is a strong ally of the disability community.

Empowering Visually Impaired Persons through Assistive Technology

Anyaele also encouraged the See Through Humanitarian Foundation to identify areas of collaboration with the Commission, particularly in the training of visually impaired individuals in the use of assistive technologies. He explained that empowering people with visual impairments by giving them access to modern technology would not only boost their confidence but also help them lead more independent and fulfilling lives.

“One of the ways we can make a significant impact is by providing platforms for visually impaired persons to receive training in assistive technologies. This will allow them to fully participate in various aspects of society and contribute meaningfully to the state’s growth. We are open to hearing your ideas and recommendations for partnerships that can make this a reality,” Anyaele stated.

He assured the Foundation of the Commission’s willingness to support NGOs whose work aligns with its mission of creating an inclusive society where persons with disabilities can thrive without fear of discrimination.

A Vision for an Inclusive Abia State

As the conversation unfolded, Mr. Anyaele reaffirmed the Commission’s commitment to fulfilling Governor Otti’s mandate of ensuring that Abia becomes a model state for inclusivity. He emphasized that the Commission is committed to working with stakeholders to eliminate discrimination against PWDs and to promote an environment that supports their full participation in society.

“The Commission remains open, accessible, and available for collaborations and partnerships that will benefit persons with disabilities. We are committed to delivering on the Governor’s vision of creating an inclusive Abia State that is free from discrimination on the grounds of disability. Together, we can build a state where all citizens, regardless of their abilities, can contribute to society and enjoy equal opportunities,” he added.

NGO Commends Abia State Government’s Disability-Friendly Policies

In response, Mr. Ogechukwu Igbeamaghi Kalu, the Executive Director of the See Through Humanitarian Foundation, expressed his gratitude to the Chairman and the Abia State government for their unwavering support of the disability community. He praised the government’s disability-friendly policies and the strides made in promoting the rights of persons with disabilities.

Kalu congratulated Anyaele on his appointment as Chairman of the State Disability Commission and lauded his efforts in advancing the rights and welfare of persons with disabilities across the state. He acknowledged the significant role that the Commission plays in ensuring that PWDs are not left behind in the state’s development agenda.

“The See Through Humanitarian Foundation is fully committed to supporting the Commission in its efforts to deliver on its mandate. We recognize the importance of ensuring that persons with disabilities, particularly those with visual impairments, are equipped with the necessary skills and tools to succeed in life,” Kalu said.

He explained that the Foundation is focused on offering job training programs and mentorship opportunities to visually impaired individuals, with the aim of empowering them to realize their full potential. According to Kalu, the Foundation’s ultimate goal is to ensure that people with visual impairments are not constrained by their disabilities but are able to contribute positively to society.

“We are particularly interested in collaborating with the Commission to train and educate visually impaired persons in the use of assistive technologies. We believe that by equipping them with the right tools, we can help them overcome many of the barriers they face and enable them to live more independent and productive lives. We look forward to working closely with the Commission to achieve this goal,” Kalu added.

Looking Ahead

As the Abia State Disability Commission continues its mission to create a more inclusive and equitable society for persons with disabilities, collaborations with NGOs like the See Through Humanitarian Foundation will play a pivotal role in driving change. By working together, the Commission and its partners can help ensure that persons with disabilities are not only included in society but are also given the tools and opportunities to thrive.

With a clear vision and a commitment to inclusivity, the Abia State government, through its Disability Commission, is setting an example for other states in Nigeria. The support for NGOs and the emphasis on empowering PWDs are critical steps toward building a society where all individuals, regardless of their abilities, can live dignified and fulfilling lives.

As the partnership between the Commission and organizations like the See Through Humanitarian Foundation continues to grow, there is hope that more persons with disabilities will be empowered to overcome challenges, maximize their potential, and make meaningful contributions to the state’s development.
