Abuja, Nigeria – In a landmark event aimed at bolstering the inclusion and rights of Persons with Disabilities (PWDs), the National Commission for Persons with Disabilities (NCPWD) reaffirmed its unwavering dedication to ensuring that PWDs are integral to national development. Dr. James David Lalu, the Executive Secretary of the NCPWD, underscored this commitment during a pivotal summit themed “Addressing Discrimination Against Persons with Disabilities in Nigeria through a Multi-faceted Approach,” hosted by the Office of the Special Assistant to the President on Special Needs and Equal Opportunity.
The summit, held in Abuja, was a significant gathering that brought together key stakeholders, policymakers, and advocates to discuss and strategize on the urgent need for inclusive policies and practices across Nigeria. In his keynote address, Dr. Lalu passionately outlined the commission’s ongoing efforts and future plans to create a more inclusive society where PWDs are not only acknowledged but are provided with ample opportunities to thrive.
“This summit serves as a crucial platform for raising awareness and emphasizing the importance of inclusivity in all aspects of our national life,” Dr. Lalu stated. “Our goal is to ensure that no person with a disability is left behind in the journey towards national development.”
One of the summit’s highlights was the launch of several groundbreaking initiatives designed to improve the lives of PWDs across the country. The introduction of the Disability Trust Fund (DTF) was a notable development, intended to provide financial support for various programs and initiatives that empower PWDs. This fund is expected to be a cornerstone in the commission’s strategy to foster economic and social inclusion.
Another critical initiative unveiled was the comprehensive database of Persons with Disabilities. This database aims to be an accurate and up-to-date repository of information, facilitating better planning and implementation of disability-inclusive policies. It is envisioned as a key tool in understanding the demographics and needs of PWDs, thereby enabling targeted interventions and support.
Additionally, the summit featured the launch of the ‘Beyond Disability Project’ and the ‘Golden Law 2018’, initiatives focused on challenging societal perceptions and eliminating barriers that hinder the full participation of PWDs in various sectors. These projects are part of a broader strategy to dismantle systemic discrimination and promote an environment where PWDs can realize their full potential.
The event also highlighted the importance of collaborative efforts in advancing disability rights. The presence of high-profile guests, including Dr. Jamila Bio Ibrahim, the Honorable Minister of Youth Development, who addressed the need for greater government commitment to empowering young PWDs, added significant weight to the proceedings. The Senior Special Assistant to the President, Hon. Abba Issa, served as the summit’s host, while Bishop Ignatius Ayau Kaigama, the Catholic Archbishop of Abuja, lent his moral support and emphasized the role of faith communities in advocating for disability rights.
Members of the House of Representatives’ Committee on Disabilities were also in attendance, signaling strong legislative support for the initiatives discussed. Their participation underscored the government’s commitment to addressing the challenges faced by PWDs in Nigeria.
The summit was a resounding success, marking a significant step forward in the collective resolve to promote disability inclusion in Nigeria.
