This call comes after the unfortunate killing of Inspector Shehu Oyibo and three others by unidentified assailants, as confirmed in an official statement from the police.
FENRAD expressed deep sorrow over these senseless killings, emphasizing the urgent need for a comprehensive review of the security measures in place across Abia State, particularly in the bustling city of Aba. The foundation has consistently advocated for enhanced security provisions, warning that the current situation could deter potential investors, despite ongoing infrastructure improvements in the region.
The organization’s leadership, led by Executive Director Comrade Nelson Nnanna Nwafor and Head of Human Rights Enforcement & Litigation Barr. Femisi Akande, highlighted the critical need for the state government and security agencies to forge a robust partnership. They stressed that such collaboration is vital for developing and implementing effective strategies to combat the rising tide of violence. In previous statements, FENRAD had called for the deployment of advanced surveillance technologies, including digital monitoring tools, to strategic locations throughout Abia State. The study revealed that from July 2023 to March 2024, Governor Alex Otti allocated N4.45 billion to security, a figure substantially higher than the N18 million spent by Anambra State Governor Charles Chukwuma Soludo during the same period. Given that Anambra has a larger population and is often considered more volatile, FENRAD argues that the funds available in Abia should be more than sufficient to address the current security challenges.
