In a promising move towards fostering inclusivity, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has pledged its commitment to ensuring a more accessible voting process for persons with disabilities in Nigeria. During a recent discussion session organized by the Policy and Advocacy Centre (PLAC) and sponsored by the MacArthur Foundation in Abuja, Mrs. Lukonaya Bello, INEC’s Director of Gender and Inclusivity, highlighted the commission’s dedication to making elections convenient for all citizens.
Speaking at the event, Mrs. Bello emphasized that INEC has already made provisions for materials aimed at assisting persons with disabilities during elections. The session, which brought together various groups representing individuals with disabilities, focused on the 2023 general election and the measures taken to enhance accessibility.
Acknowledging the challenges faced by persons with disabilities during the 2023 polls, Mrs. Bello assured attendees that INEC is actively addressing these issues to ensure a smoother experience in future elections. She expressed INEC’s determination to enable every eligible voter, regardless of ability or disability, to participate fully in the democratic process.
“This is about making the process accessible by ensuring the accessibility of the polling unit and advocating to stakeholders to make the entire process inclusive,” Mrs. Bello stated. She urged different disability groups to collaborate with the commission to collectively enhance the country’s electoral system.
Mrs. Bello also commended the organizers, PLAC, and their sponsor, the MacArthur Foundation, for their unwavering commitment to inclusivity in the electoral process. Addressing concerns and flaws identified in the 2023 general election, she reassured the public that INEC is actively taking note of these issues and is committed to rectifying them in future elections.
The Executive Director of PLAC, Mr. Clement Nwankwo, expressed concern over the exclusion of many individuals from governance due to various challenges. He emphasized the critical role of democracy and citizens’ ability to choose leaders who respond to their needs.
Amina Saliyu, Deputy Director of the MacArthur Foundation, stressed the importance of providing for persons with disabilities as a societal obligation that can impact all vulnerable segments. This commitment aligns with a broader vision for an inclusive electoral system where every citizen, regardless of their abilities, can actively contribute to shaping the country’s future.
In conclusion, INEC’s dedication to inclusivity marks a significant step towards creating a more accessible and responsive democratic process in Nigeria, reflecting a collective effort to address the diverse needs of its citizens.
