The Leprosy Mission Nigeria (TLMN) has unveiled an edifice as their new National Office in Nigeria.
The commissioning of the New Leprosy Mission Nigeria National Coordination Office Building, took place on Wednesday, in Abuja.
The National Director, TLM Nigeria, Dr. Sunday Udo, while appreciating major stakeholders that contributed to the completion of the building, said: “The commissioning of our new office building, not only celebrates the physical manifestation of our growth and progress but also signifies a significant milestone in our organisation’s history. TLM-Nigeria is part of a global Fellowship operating in 33 countries, As a global entity. TLM will be 150 years old next year.
“In 2001 the Federal Government of Nigeria invited The Leprosy Mission to support its fight against leprosy and was asked to coordinate this support in four states. However, the organisation has grown exponentially through the years, fuelled by the passion, commitment, and unwavering dedication of its Board, staff and partners.
“Today, The Leprosy Mission- Nigeria operates in 27 states nationwide, expanding its reach and impact on an unprecedented scale and striving for zero transmission of leprosy, zero disabilities, and zero discrimination. In addition to its leprosy-focused initiatives, the organisation has extended its services to address other neglected tropical diseases (NTDs), tuberculosis (TB), and cross disabilities. This increased responsibility came with the need to increase our office space.”
He specially thanked The Leprosy Mission England and Wales for their financial support
“To the dedicated staff of The Leprosy Mission Nigeria, I extended my sincere gratitude for your unwavering commitment and hard work. You have demonstrated immense resilience, creativity and compassion in service” he stated.
He also acknowledged their partners, Government of Nigeria, Australia, Sweden, The NTBLCP, IHVN, National Commission for Persons With Disabilities, for standing with them throughout their journey
“Your collaboration, expertise, and shared commitments to our mission have been invaluable” he stated.
The royal father of the day, who commissioned the building, the paramount ruler of the Tiv nation, Orcivirigh Prof James Ortese Iorzua Ayatse, in his brief speech said that the TLMN National Coordination Office building marks a significant milestone in our collective journey to defeat leprosy and bring healing, restoration and dignity to people affected by leprosy and other Neglected Tropical Diseases across Nigeria.
HRM Ayatse who is also the President, Association Of Christian Traditional Rulers of Nigeria called on medical experts, stakeholders and other concerned Nigerians to join in the fight against leprosy.
He pointed out that the development of the new edifice marked a significant milestone in the fight to completely eradicate leprosy.
He said: “Building will serve as a hub, enabling TLM Nigeria to expand its reach and foster greater collaboration with stakeholders at all levels as well as enhance its research capabilities and sustain its interventions towards transforming the lives of the people and communities affected by leprosy.
“Leprosy is curable, treatable, preventable, it’s treatment is free”.
We must keep challenging the deep-rooted myths and stereotypes surrounding this disease, Leprosy is not hereditary and it is not a curse
“Therefore, we must eradicate all stigma and prejudice associated with leprosy. People affected by the disease are like you and me- deserving of love, acceptance and support.
He further urged the public to be agent of change, challenge discrimination when they see one and extend hands of compassion and support to those affected by leprosy.
He also urged stakeholders to support TLM Nigeria to achieve their mission so that we will create a Nigeria where the marginalized find acceptance, dignity, a renewed sense of purpose and live life in it’s fullness.
Chairperson, Board of Trustees, TLM Nigeria, Mrs Nella Andem-Awa Rabana( SAN) in her speech appreciated all stakeholders for their unwavering support towards the success of The Leprosy Mission Nigeria.
She expressed gratitude to TLM England and Wales who supported the project.
She also appreciated the staff of TLM Nigeria for their dedication and tireless efforts saying that the new office building will not only serve to enhance their work and collaboration but also stand as a testament for the commitment to the cause.
The occasion was graced by Deputy Head of Mission, Mr. Joran Bjallerstedt, Charge d’Affaires, Ms. Leann Johnston, TLM Nigeria Goodwill Ambassador, Chief Chika Okpala MON (aka Chief Zebrudaya Okorigwe Nwogbo, Alias 4.30), TLM England &Wales Country Leader, Mr. Peter Waddup, Pst. Shola Adesoye and Board Member, Mr. Ayuba Adamu Paiko.
The New National Office which is located opposite the old office has accessibility features for persons with disabilities, a kitchen, 60 to 50 persons capacity boardroom, meeting rooms and offices.
