Persons with disabilities in Calabar, Cross River state are complaining about the insistent neglect and abandonment by the leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party as against global trend of inclusion.
This complain was made pertinent by the current exclusion of persons with disability from the party’s recent national working committee list for the bye election in Cross River State to be precise . Bar. Felix Asikpo Edet, a PDP stalwart and one of the contenders for the State House of Assembly, Calabar Municipality Constituency stated clearly “we are ready to turn disability into ability , we are ready to create awareness , we have been useful and of value to the party, but they need to allow us to work , we are in support of the party and we want them to be fully in support of us, all the over 100 persons with disability that attended the last flag off in Calabar where with their voters Card.
He reaffirmed the commitment of persons with disabilities and their unalloyed support for the Peoples Democratic Party , appealing to the party to give them due consideration in the party’s activities , reminding them of the several challenges and opportunities that disability have cost us, there must be something people with disability can do and party activities and positions are not exempted . He further canvassed for a quota system in party activities and positions for person with disability.
He expressed extreme gratitude and appreciation to the leadership of the party for appointing two persons with disability as national delegates , in his statement “ I come from a constituency of people with disabilities , what makes them happy , excites me , so does their agitation saddens me “ I am grateful for believing in me , he added .
