The 2024 World Disability Day was celebrated with remarkable grandeur in Ibadan, Oyo State, as the Oyo State Chapter of the Joint National Association of Persons with Disabilities (JONAPWD) organized a vibrant and impactful event. The gathering, held on December 9th at the JDPC Hall, Basorun, brought together influential stakeholders, disability advocates, and community leaders to champion the rights and aspirations of Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) under the global theme, “Amplifying the Leadership of Persons with Disabilities for an Inclusive and Sustainable Future.”
The event, hosted by the charismatic State Assistant Secretary of JONAPWD, Comrade Musa Akinsawe, radiated a spirit of unity, hope, and progress. It was a momentous occasion that underscored the commitment of PWDs and their allies to achieving an inclusive society where everyone thrives.

The event began with opening prayers led by Comrade Ojeniyi Olufemi, setting a tone of gratitude and purpose. This was followed by the introduction of guests by the dynamic compere, Comrade Musa Akinsawe.
The Chairman of Oyo JONAPWD, Hon. Femi Ajulo, delivered a heartfelt welcome address, acknowledging the commitment of stakeholders to advancing the welfare of PWDs. He emphasized the importance of leadership within the disability community as a cornerstone for achieving inclusivity and sustainability in Oyo State and beyond.
Inspiring Lectures and Interactive Symposiums
The highlight of the day’s program was the series of thought-provoking lectures and interactive sessions.
The first lecture, delivered by Barrister Adenike Ibitara, explored the theme “Amplifying the Leadership of Persons with Disabilities for an Inclusive and Sustainable Future.” The session sparked engaging conversations, as participants shared ideas on how PWDs can take charge of their future through proactive leadership and collaboration. The discussion was moderated by the Oyo State JONAPWD Vice Chairman 1, Mr. Chuks, who expertly guided the question-and-answer session.
Next came a symposium anchored by the Oyo JONAPWD Secretary, Mrs. Roseline Oniyide, on the topic, “Awareness about Sexual Reproductive and Health Services for Persons with Disabilities.” This critical subject underscored the need for greater access to healthcare services for PWDs, emphasizing education and advocacy to eliminate barriers to reproductive health rights.
The second lecture of the day, delivered by Mr. Jide Bamgbose, revisited the overarching theme, further exploring actionable strategies to ensure PWDs are adequately represented in leadership and development efforts. The session, moderated by the Vice Chairman 2, Dr. Akangbe, featured lively discussions that reinforced the importance of sustained advocacy for the rights of PWDs.
A Celebration of Generosity and Support
One of the most memorable moments of the event came when Barrister Ayodele Adekanbi, the Director-General of OYSAPWD, alongside other prominent leaders, made significant donations to JONAPWD. Their contributions were a testament to the confidence in the association’s leadership and the remarkable strides it has made in advancing the cause of PWDs in Oyo State.
Speaking during his donation, Barr. Adekanbi praised JONAPWD’s efforts in creating a unified and purpose-driven disability community. “The direction this organization is heading is inspiring,” he stated, urging the leadership to maintain its momentum.
Other stakeholders echoed similar sentiments, commending JONAPWD for its advocacy, capacity-building initiatives, and focus on inclusivity.
