Varsity Don urges govts to create self-reliance programs for persons with disabilities

A university don, Professor Maryam Koko, called on governments at all levels to initiate programmes and policies that will allow for self sufficiency and full realization of Persons With Disabilities’ potentials in the society.

She made the call during a public lecture to mark this year’s International Day of Persons With Disability held in Sokoto on Wednesday.

In her presentation titled, ‘Impact of Discrimination/Isolation of Person With Disability Rules of Government,’ she noted that creating various economic policies will no doubt boost their self-reliance drives.

Prof. Koko also advocated for joint support to people with disabilities as, there are more than enough abilities in disabilities. She urged the persons with disabilities not to be deterred and stand out in the society.

Mr. Ameh Jerry, Sokoto state coordinator, ‘Give Care to Young Lives’ in his presentation, called on all and sundy to henceforth eschew all forms of discrimination and isolation of persons with disabilities.

He said, ‘though, diverse factors are largely responsible for certain disabilities in human beings, no human race, either in the developed, developing and under developed world that is immune to this challenges.

“For some, the cause might be parental neglect and carelessness on the part of caregivers. For others, it might be because of accidents and unforeseen catastrophes. Yet others are better described as God’s making to enable us honour the creator.

“Not minding the cause, however these people with Special Needs are undoubtedly very unique. Their strength is unimaginable. They are enviable human beings that needs our collective support at all times.

The event was organized by Give Care to Young Lives in conjunction with Joint Association of People With Disabilities, Sokoto state chapter with support from Leprosy Mission Nigeria.

The event was marked wit Road Walk round Sokoto metropolis that, terminated at the Central Motor Park where the members received by Alhaji Labaran Abubakar, stare branch Secretary, on behalf of the Chairman, Nigeria Union of Road Transport Workers, NURTW, Taxi long journey.

Labaran pointed that, there was no discrimination against anyone that patronizes facilities and services rendered within the park.

The scribe pointed out that there are people with one form or other of disabilities among bonafide members of the union and, there has never been any report of discrimination against them.
