The safety of people with disability at their work place has been described as one that is very Paramount considering their limitations.
The Director, Center for Disability and Special Needs Research, Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Unizik, Awka, Anambra State, Prof Williams Obiozor stated this while speaking to Unizik Fm correspondent on the Day for safety and health at work place being commomerated on every 28th of April globally.
The professor of Adult learning and special Education made it clear that people with disability go through work hazards because of neglect and not putting in place disability friendly facilities at their work place that help them function effectively referring to buildings that house’s offices without the right staircase for them which are rarely found in Nigeria.
Prof Obiozor commended The Vice Chancellor of Unizik Prof Charles Esimone for putting up a policy at Unizik that every new building inside the school must have facility for people with disability before it gets the management approval and also ensuring that designated parking lot are given to people with disability who are Staff of the university as seen abroad.
He also called for an insurance policy for staff at their work place in case of accident as it will help increase work output, stressing that a healthy environment brings out maximum output.
