In a compelling open letter addressed to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the All Rights Foundation Africa (TAF Africa) has sounded the alarm regarding the distressing effects of the current economic crisis on vulnerable Nigerians, with a particular focus on Persons with Disabilities (PWDs).
The organization, known for its advocacy for the rights and inclusion of PWDs in Nigeria, expressed deep concern about the devastating consequences of the economic downturn on the most marginalized members of society. TAF Africa emphasizes the urgent need for strategic and compassionate measures to address these challenges.
Jake Epelle, CEO/Founder of TAF Africa and Convener of Disability Inclusion Nigeria, outlined the critical issues faced by PWDs, including the skyrocketing inflation rate affecting access to healthcare, education, transportation, and basic necessities.
The letter highlighted the disproportionate impact on persons with disabilities due to pre-existing societal and infrastructural barriers.
In response to these challenges, TAF Africa proposed concrete and inclusive interventions for the government to consider:
- Establishment of food banks and stamps, preferably at the local government level, to provide palliative care for persons with disabilities.
- Allocation of additional resources to support inclusive education initiatives, including training teachers, providing assistive technologies, and creating accessible learning environments.
- Prioritization of affordable and accessible transportation infrastructure for persons with disabilities.
- Implementation of skills development programs tailored to the specific needs of persons with disabilities, fostering employability.
- Incentives and support for employers creating inclusive workplaces, including reasonable accommodations.
- Implementation of tax breaks for manufacturers to make assistive technologies more affordable.
- Regular assessment of the effectiveness of interventions and collection of data on the impact on the lives of persons with disabilities.
The letter acknowledges that some recommendations may be applicable in the mid to long term, but urges President Tinubu to take immediate and decisive action on short-term measures to alleviate the suffering of vulnerable Nigerians. TAF Africa believes that these recommendations, if adopted, will demonstrate the government’s commitment to inclusive governance and social justice.
Jake Epelle expressed trust in President Tinubu’s leadership to guide Nigeria towards a more inclusive and prosperous future. TAF Africa stands ready to collaborate with the government to ensure that no Nigerian, especially persons with disabilities, is left behind in the journey towards economic recovery and social development. The organization looks forward to witnessing positive and inclusive changes benefiting all Nigerians.
