In a remarkable stride toward economic empowerment and inclusivity, Sightsavers International, a renowned international non-governmental organization, has successfully empowered 100 women with disabilities (PWDs) in Kano State. The milestone event, which took place on Wednesday, showcased the transformative potential of collaboration and targeted interventions in creating opportunities for marginalized groups.
The initiative, funded by the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) and UNICEF, was implemented by Sightsavers in partnership with Unilever and the Growing Business Foundation. This groundbreaking program aimed to equip women with disabilities with the skills, resources, and confidence to thrive as entrepreneurs and active participants in the labor market.
A Tailored Approach to Empowerment
Speaking during the empowerment ceremony, Sightsavers Programme Officer, Anita Nchat, emphasized the organization’s commitment to promoting a disability-inclusive labor market. She revealed that the project was carefully designed in collaboration with the Industrial Training Fund (ITF) to develop a curriculum that would address the unique challenges faced by PWDs while enabling them to achieve economic independence.
“This initiative is a testament to our commitment to ensuring that persons with disabilities are not left behind. By equipping them with entrepreneurial skills and providing them with resources, we are not just addressing unemployment but creating a pathway for them to thrive in the business world,” Nchat stated.
The comprehensive training covered essential areas such as entrepreneurship, business management, and strategies for sustaining enterprises. Participants were exposed to practical skills that would enable them to build and grow their businesses, contributing to their communities and the economy at large.
