Star Children Development Initiative (SCDI) in collaboration with Stanbic IBTC Bank on 20th to 22nd October, 2022 organized a Three-Day Entrepreneurship and Capacity Building Training on ICT, Digitalization, Data Analysis, Entrepreneurship Skills & Confidence Building Training for Women with disabilities.
The training which took place at Awka, Anambra State have 100 women with disabilities as beneficiaries.
The founder and CEO of Star Children Development Initiative, Mrs. Grace Alexander while speaking to The Qualitative Magazine (TQM) via phone from her base United Kingdom said that what informed the initiative to empower women with disabilities in ICT is the fact that Information Technology is where the world is now and women with disabilities should move and identify with the trend. There is a lot of economic opportunities when it comes to ICT and women with disabilities should be left behind.
“It is a known fact that women with disabilities faced challenges more than their counterparts, men with disabilities and women without disabilities. Women with disabilities are facing discrimination as a result of disability and gender. This has deprived women with disabilities a lot of economic opportunities to the extent that they constitute a very large population of poor people in Nigeria”.
She further stated that SCDI in their usual quest of empowering persons with disabilities especially women with disabilities found it important to build the capacity of women with disabilities in order to enhance their self-esteem to withstand the stigma, discrimination, incessant Sexual Gender Based Violence against them.
“Economic empowerment is one way persons with disabilities especially women with disabilities can fight discrimination and stigmatization against them”.
The training which lasted for three days was coordinated by Raheem Olatunji, was very rigorously, intensive and impactful.
The beneficiaries were expected to harness the skills gained and further improve their lives.
