Presidential Aide Condemns Discrimination Against Person with Disability by Rano Air

Senior Special Assistant to the President on Special Needs and Equal Opportunities, Hon. Mohammed Abba Isa, has issued a stern rebuke against Rano Air Limited for discriminating against Mr. Usman Bura Gabai, the Chairman of the Yobe State chapter of Joint National Association for Persons with Disability (JONAPWD).

The incident, which occurred on May 14th, 2024, at Maiduguri International Airport, saw Mr. Gabai denied boarding despite having booked and paid for his ticket. This discriminatory act prevented him from attending a vital Disability Stakeholders conference, causing significant harm and violating his fundamental right to freedom of movement.

In a statement released by his Director of Media and Communications, Lanre Oloyede, Hon. Abba Isa condemned the actions of Rano Air Limited, describing it as a clear breach of contract and a violation of Mr. Gabai’s human rights.

“This egregious act not only constitutes discrimination against Mr. Gabai but also flagrantly violates the Discrimination Against Persons With Disabilities (Prohibition) Act 2018. Such behavior is wholly unacceptable and runs counter to the principles of inclusivity and equality championed by the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu,” stated Hon. Abba Isa.

Expressing solidarity with Mr. Gabai and all persons with disabilities facing discrimination, Hon. Abba Isa called for swift accountability from Rano Air Limited. He demanded a public apology to Mr. Gabai, to be published in at least two national newspapers, and urged the company to implement measures to prevent similar incidents in the future.

“Discrimination has no place in our society, and we must collectively strive to build a more inclusive and equitable world for all. The government of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu remains committed to upholding the rights of persons with disabilities and will not tolerate any form of injustice,” emphasized Hon. Abba Isa.

The statement issued by the Senior Presidential Aide highlights the urgent need for greater awareness and enforcement of disability rights legislation, emphasizing the importance of fostering a society that embraces diversity and respects the rights of all individuals, irrespective of disability status.
