In a resounding declaration of dedication to gender equality and women’s empowerment, President Ahmed Bola Tinubu’s administration continues to make significant strides under the leadership of Senior Special Assistant on Special Needs and Equal Opportunities, Abba Isa. Isa emphasized this commitment during his address commemorating the 2024 International Women’s Day, specifically focusing on the empowerment of Women with Disabilities.
Celebrating Progress Under the Renewed Hope Agenda
Delivering his speech on Friday, March 8, in Abuja, Abba Isa highlighted the administration’s achievements in fostering gender equality across various sectors. Under the Renewed Hope Agenda, President Tinubu’s government has implemented comprehensive policies and programs aimed at advancing women’s rights and opportunities nationwide. Notably, these efforts encompass education, employment, healthcare, and political representation.
“Our proudest achievement,” Isa stated, “has been the promotion of women’s participation in governance and decision-making processes.”
Initiatives Driving Change
Abba Isa shed light on initiatives implemented within the past four months, emphasizing tangible actions to advance gender equality. One standout initiative is the Disability Inclusion Governors Connect Program, inaugurated by Lagos State Governor Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu. The program includes a focus on Women and Girls Educational and Skills Empowerment, aiming to connect with governors, raise disability awareness, facilitate compliance with disability norms, provide technical support, and recognize and induct compliant administrators into the disability-friendly Hall of Fame.
Earlier this year, Isa’s office facilitated the inclusion of women with disabilities in the National Business Skills Development Initiative (NBSDI), launched by the Small and Medium Enterprises Development Agency of Nigeria (SMEDAN). The women were trained in various vocational skills, provided with startup kits, and empowered with funds to kickstart their businesses.
Future Commitments and Collaborations
Looking ahead, Abba Isa assured the public of President Tinubu’s unwavering commitment to advancing gender equality and women’s empowerment. The administration pledges to address systemic barriers hindering women’s full participation and inclusion in society. This includes increasing women’s representation in leadership positions, fortifying legal frameworks to protect women’s rights, and expanding access to education and economic opportunities for women and girls.
Recognizing the importance of partnerships, Isa stressed collaboration with civil society organizations, the private sector, and international stakeholders in advancing the administration’s gender equality agenda.
As President Tinubu’s administration continues to champion these causes, the nation eagerly anticipates the sustained progress and positive impact on the lives of women across Nigeria.
