As the upcoming local government elections in Ogun State draw near, a strong call for inclusivity and equal representation has emerged from the community of Persons with Disabilities (PWDs). Under the banner of the Concerned Progressive Persons with Disability, PWDs in the state have appealed to Governor Dapo Abiodun for the inclusion of their members in key elective positions across the 20 local government areas (LGAs).
In an open letter addressed to the governor, and signed by prominent leaders of the group—Kamaldeen Olatunji Lawal, Dr. Michael Ebonhor, and Abiodun Adebesin—they stressed that ensuring PWDs have a voice in government would mark a significant step toward inclusive governance in Ogun State. They believe that PWD representation in the upcoming elections would set a precedent for other states in Nigeria, while also providing hope and empowerment to the PWD community.
A Push for Representation and Equal Opportunity
The group’s letter points to specific candidates from the PWD community, including a chairmanship aspirant in Odogbolu Local Government and nine others vying for councillorship positions across various wards. These individuals, they argue, have the qualifications, experience, and dedication required to serve their communities effectively. However, the group is concerned that discrimination and exclusion from the political process have historically marginalized PWDs.
“We, Concerned Progressive Persons with Disabilities, humbly appeal to your esteemed office with hope and anticipation. As we approach the Local Government elections in November, we recognize a remarkable opportunity to promote inclusivity and diversity in leadership,” the statement reads. “We urge you to seize this moment to make a profound impact on the lives of Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) in Ogun State.”
Spotlight on Key PWD Aspirants
The letter makes particular mention of Fasola Olamide from Ward 11, who is vying for the position of executive chairman of Odogbolu Local Government. Olamide, who has already served as the outgoing Secretary to the Local Government (SLG), has proven his capacity for leadership despite the challenges he has faced as a person with a disability. His candidacy is seen as a pivotal moment for PWD representation in Ogun politics.
In addition to Olamide’s chairmanship campaign, the group highlighted the candidacy of Babatunde Nureni Alao, who is running for councillor in Ward 3 of Ado Odo Ota Local Government, and other PWD aspirants such as Yekini Adeniyi Abiodun (Ward 13, Odogbolu LGA), Thomas Francisca Isioma (Ward 10, Sagamu LGA), and Wasiu Olalekan Jinadu (Ward 4, Ifo LGA). Each of these individuals is seeking councillorship positions in their respective wards, with the shared goal of bringing attention to the issues facing PWDs in their communities.
Other notable PWD aspirants include Caleb Adesina Akiije-Ogunyemi from Ward 2, Ijebu-North, Mabawonku Kabir Oyedele from Ward 11, Sagamu Local Government, and Salaudeen Omotosho Kosamat from Ward 13, Sagamu Local Government.
Fighting for a Level Playing Field
The Concerned Progressive Persons with Disability group is not just calling for recognition but also for a level playing field where PWD candidates can compete fairly. In their letter, they implored Governor Abiodun to ensure that PWDs are not sidelined or discriminated against during the election process. The group pointed out that PWDs in Ogun State have historically faced barriers to participating in the political process, including inadequate representation and limited opportunities to run for office.
“Unfortunately, PWDs in Ogun State have faced discrimination, inadequate representation in government, and limited opportunities to participate in the democratic process,” the statement continues. “We have been marginalized and denied the chance to occupy political spaces. However, we trust that your administration will champion our cause and empower us to exhibit our leadership roles.”
The group emphasized that by supporting PWD candidates, the Ogun State government would be taking a crucial step toward fostering a more inclusive and representative government, one that truly reflects the diverse composition of the state’s population.
The Case for Inclusive Governance
The PWD community’s appeal is rooted in a larger vision of inclusive governance that transcends tokenism. The group believes that the inclusion of PWDs in leadership positions will bring a unique and necessary perspective to local government, particularly in addressing the specific needs and challenges faced by the disability community.
“By supporting our candidates, you will be fostering a more inclusive and representative government, which will benefit the entire community,” the statement reads. “You will be writing a new chapter in the history of Ogun State, one that values diversity and promotes equal opportunities.”
The group also stressed that PWDs, when given the opportunity, have the potential to make meaningful contributions to society. They noted that many of the PWD candidates have served in various capacities within their communities, and their lived experiences with disability have equipped them with the resilience and empathy needed to lead effectively.
The Road Ahead
As the local government elections approach, the PWD community in Ogun State is watching closely, hopeful that their voices will be heard and their candidates given a fair chance. The outcome of the elections could set a precedent not only for Ogun but for the entire country, as PWDs continue to push for greater inclusion in all spheres of life, including politics.
The plea from the Concerned Progressive Persons with Disability group is more than a demand for representation—it is a call for equality, justice, and the recognition of the inherent value of all individuals, regardless of their physical abilities. The group’s appeal to Governor Abiodun represents the broader struggle of PWDs in Nigeria for the right to participate fully in the democratic process and to have a seat at the table where decisions that affect their lives are made.
As the election season heats up, it remains to be seen how the state government will respond to these calls. For now, the PWD community is optimistic that Governor Abiodun will act in the spirit of inclusivity and ensure that their candidates are given the opportunity to serve. The November elections will undoubtedly be a defining moment for PWD representation in Ogun State.
