NCPWD Trains Stakeholders On Reporting and Response To Threats and Discrimination against PWDs

The National Commission for Persons With Disabilities in an attempt to further protect the fundamental rights and dignity of Persons with Disabilities, has organized an intensive capacity building for major stakeholders of the disability communities/desks today 3rd February, 2023@Army Resource Centre, Abuja.

Addressing the participants, the Executive Secretary, National Commission for Persons With Disabilities, Mr James David Lalu urged the men and officers of the Nigerian Security and Civil Defense Corps (NSCDC) to continue to uphold the rights of PWDs in Nigeria.

“I am very excited to let you know that our partnership with NSCDC is yielding positive results” he said, as he applauded the efforts of the officers and men of the security agency.

The ES further stated that disability status is not static as it could increase as a result of accident at any time, stressing that humanity is about diversity. “Health status can change when no one envisages” he pointed.

Lalu, however, bemoaned the unsuspecting persons that exploit PWDs using them to beg for alms, stating that it is totally unacceptable as it negates the provisions of the 2018 Discrimination against Persons with Disabilities (prohibition) law.

Conversely, he seized the occasion to sensitize the participants on the skills and intelligence of PWDs. “Our disabilities do not limit our abilities whatsoever, he affirmed”

Leading the technical session, the Lead consultant, Mr. Benson Olatunji underscored that access to information will help tackle discrimination.

He commended NCPWD for developing the monitoring and reporting app that provides the platform for inclusivity and protection of the rights of PWDs across the 774 local governments in Nigeria.

He also informed the meeting about the recent upgrade in the Disability Certificate processing.

According to him, the verification code that is generated for an applicant on the disability app will be confirmed by qualified doctors before the final certificate is issued.
