The National Commission for Persons with Disabilities (NCPWD) has endorsed TAF Africa’s Able to Serve Campaign for the appointment of Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) into political offices.
The Executive Secretary, NCPWD, Mr. James David Lalu made this pledge of the Commission’s support during a courtesy visit by TAF Africa Team to the Commission in Abuja on Thursday.
TAF Africa delegation led by its CEO and Founder, Ambassador Jake Epelle presented their idea of advocacy for the appointment of persons with disabilities by the newly elected president and the governors.
He proposed that every elected candidate earned at least a vote of person with disability as such, persons with disabilities in Nigeria deserved to be appointed as Ministers and Commissioners in federal and state level.
He regreted that inspite of the efforts put in place for about 34 candidates with disabilities to emerge in the last general elections, non of them won. So, it is instructive that persons with disabilities become part of governance by being appointed in different strategic and important positions in the government.
He pointed out that there are many qualified Persons with Disabilities to be appointed for these important positions and seek the support of the commission in the campaign.
Mr. James Lalu, Executive Secretary, NCPWD reaffirmed the commitment of the commission towards the welfare, rights and opportunities of persons with disabilities and pledge to support the campaign citing that the move is contained in some sections of Disability Law.
